Why more than four strings?

I just plain LIKE five strings. I prefer narrow spacing, and I like a brass nut; I enjoy having a closed low 'E', and having 'C' and 'D' at my disposal without detuning.

I played 6 for a while, but I live down low, and stick with 5 now. I have a few 4's, and sometimes they feel 'right', but 5 is my favorite.

By the way, I had a '66 Fender Bass V which was a high-c short-scale mustang, and the studio upright I used was a 1938 Kay 5-string with low B (they were originally supposed to be low C, but almost everybody tuned them down to B to keep the patterns consistent).
