Why?
Short Answer...
Cause I want them / can.
I enjoy them, nothing more. As far as feel, playability, and sound, I could get by with just one and be fine, except for the acoustic. If you have ever gigged an acoustic bass on two feet for 4 hours you know, not the most comfortable thing in the world to deal with.
The long drawn out answer or what the different basses mean to and/or do for me...
While all my basses are 4 stringers and fretted, they are all distinct in their own ways. They either look, sound, or feel different or some combination thereof.
As far as tunings, I'm involved in different things and I might be tuning to D, D#, or E and I never know which bass I'm going to be using except for my E stuff. So far the CIJ GL has been getting all of the E tuned duty so it's neck setup is for E. The rest are all setup and tuned to D# leaving them in the middle between D and E to tune up or down if need be. Occasionally one(green jazz with rounds) will get tuned down to C as well.
The closest in sound, feel, and looks, to each other two would be my "twins".
2021 blue flame top jazz & 2022 green flame top jazz. I have them strung with rounds and half rounds, so the biggest difference to me in them would be feel, and the half rounds are a little darker sounding.
Then there's my 2006 - 2008 CIJ GL signature jazz. Just feels different, sounds different. Raised pickup poles, thinnest neck of all my basses, has its own distinct sound and grit while being the most comfortable of all my basses to play. It just feels fast when you put your hand on the neck.
The rest of my basses...
2019 Am Performer strung with tapewounds and upgraded with a new control circuit(no greasebucket tone circuit) and Aguilar's hum cancelling PJ pup set. The bass can go from very tubular (think bells or chimes) type of sound because of the strings, to a very vintage gritty type sound when digging in hard due to the Aguilar PJ pup set. Neck doesn't feel fast, not like my CIJ GL, but the neck does project a feel that gives me the confidence and the desire to try new songs / bass lines I didn't think I could play without some extended practicing.
2019 Player Precision strung with rounds and has a FCS '62 P Pup, just a straight up thick P bass sound that can easily get gritty and vintage when wanted. For classic rock and blues the bass has the sound and the looks for it. Sounds great playing grunge too, but doesn't look the part IMO.
2019 California Series Kingman V2 JTB, it's an acoustic with a Jazz spec'd short scale neck and strung with flats. Definitely different than any of the electrics in look, feel, and sound. For that plugged in "MTV Unplugged" look and feel gig, it fits the bill.
