Why not a Fender JP?

You don't need to look any farther:

Hey Mr DanBass, OP said A JAZZ BODY, like you quoted a number of times… all you show are P bodies...

He was also asking for Fender specifically lol not sure what point was trying to be made there...

Anyway, I have a 2007 MIJ Aerodyne PJ and it is awesome. It is the only 4 string that I play these days. Super comfortable, plays great, sounds great and you can still find them easily.

Edit: Just saw Aerodynes aren't the OP's thing. If its because of looks I can totally understand as they may not be everyone's idea of eye candy, but if its another reason I would urge you to give them another try!

The pickguard situation can be a little awkward unless the P pup is moved forward (out of the sweet spot) or the pickguard itself extends closer toward the bridge pup. I had such a beast for a while and the P body and guard make more sense to me... or do away with the pickguard altogether.

That's not it, I'm just mixed up on the terminology (I now perceive that the order of P and J indicates p/u order)

Basically, looking for the same p/u configuration as a PJ (P neck, J bridge) but on a jazz body with jazz type neck...

If you consider going the "build your own" route, you can order that exact configuration from Warmoth.

Maybe the question should be, can the P pu be moved, or does it have to be centered where it is? You can't have a PJ configuration with the J pu in the neck position, because no one's ever moved a P pu closer to the bridge. At least that's what I'm thinking.

<ahem> My Blacktop Jazz says different! :smug: ;) :D

Now, if you mean to say something like, "No one's ever moved a Precision pickup closer to the bridge to put it in the 'sweet spot'", the the Reggie Hamilton-sig says otherwise. I could be wrong, but I believe it's the only P/J Jazz that comes stock with the P-pup in the classic position.

My roommate just picked up one of those and I love it!

I always wondered why Fender called this bass a Power JAZZ Bass Special when it clearly has a P body, oh well they are Fender and they do what they want.

I have one just like this I have to let go because of compressed vertebrae in my back. I love the way it sounds but I can't handle the weight anymore. These are great basses and notice the reversed P pickup which I have always thought was a better idea than the original to get the PU farther towards the neck on the D and G strings.

Here's a bass from Electra. Some guys are trying to restart that old 80s brand.

This sort of design (Fender Blacktop Jazz too) is what I'd call a J/P.

A P/J would be what one might already expect. A P-bass with a P-pickup in the regular spot, but has a J pickup in the bridge.

To be a little more accurate (re: nit-picky'cause that's what I do ), it was a creation of Fender Japan, which always had a much cooler design esthetic about them, if I do say so myself. Also, knowing what I know about the Japanese take on English, not to mention their love of plays-on-words (it's a language made for punning), I wouldn't be surprised if they took the term "P/J" and substituted the word "PRECISION" with "POWER" ("P/J" = "POWER/JAZZ"). But that's just an educated guess…I could be wrong.

I'm sorry to hear you have to let your bass go. Just out of curiosity, are you listing it on the TB Classifieds?

The OP also said he loves the versatility of the PJ's so I showed HIM a bunch of PJ pickuped Basses lol, ANYWAY! no point was trying to be made at all. And he's not looking for Fender specifically, the OP is looking for a PJ pickup configuration a Jazz body with a Jazz TYPE neck.
