Why Phil Lynott?

I love Phil, he was an incredible bad ass songwriter, lead vocalist, and bassist, and I’m a huge Thin Lizzy fan. But $12.5K is far more than I’d spend.

My recommendation is to find a good black Fender P-Bass, with a maple fingerboard on the cheap, and get a mirror pickguard made for it. Save yourself about $11.5 K.

Here’s my early 00’s Fender MIA Standard Precision. I know it has a rosewood (or pau ferro, I’m not entirely sure) fingerboard, but regardless, I’ve wanted to get a mirror pickguard made for it since I bought it used, as my tribute to Phil.

12k is insane. Any good P played with a pick can give you the Lynott sound.

I agree. To my knowledge, Phil played stock instruments. I believe he played the current production Fender Precisions of that era.

I’ve also seen live footage of him playing an Ibanez P-style bass, and photos of him playing a Rickenbacker.

IIRC he switched between Rotosound Jazz Flats 77’s, and Rotosound Swing Bass 66’s.

This isn’t really a “signature guitar” in the lines of, “…this is what I play, if you want to play like me.”
Its much more along the lines of a historical recreation collector’s piece to hang on a wall as art.
The custom shop does these very limited runs more for advertising than anything else.
Nobody is going to buy a recreation of Terry Kath’s Tele to play on stage night after night.

I had to Google Phil Lynott to find out who he was. Must have been before my time or outside of my musical tastes?

Out of your tastes I'll sort of accept. But before youre time is never an acceptable answer. No one on the planet was here in Mozarts time, but we all know him. anyone that made music in the over 100 years of recorded musical history is not before anyones time. its all available in your time to listen to.

but yes, the bass would be overpriced no matter what name is on it.

When I saw the price, I expected it to be signed by Phil Lynott. (or at least played by him once) :jawdrop:

Do other Fender (not Squier) sig basses go for this kinda scratch?

Heck, even Gene Simmons "plays" the bass (and signs it?) before selling it for 12K.
