Why piezo on electric bass is so underrated?

I have had good results with K&K pickups for bass (and guitar for that matter).

I only ever played a bass with a piezo one time. I sounded pretty good to me. I didn't get to spend much time tinkering with the bass because I was at a bass guitar show.

But, I had issue with "rubbing sounds". I could hear my shirt buttons on the back of the bass. I was wearing a "bolo tie" (trying to look cool) and I could hear the ends of the tie tapping on the bass body. Seems like I could hear my shirt sleeve sliding on the edge of the body also.

So, for that, I wasn't too impressed with piezo.

I'd consider giving it another chance. It sounds like the fault there was not in the pickup, but in where the builder decided to place it.

I consider Piezo complementary to magnetics. More "round" sound

I started off in the early 70s with experimenting with upright pick ups and found that a mix of a Barcus Berry pick up along with a Polytone mixed through a Ampeg B 15 N ( one pick up in each channel) worked well to give me a great useable tone. Unfortunately I had to stuff the f holes because of the Polytone being a feedback monster. As I progressed through the years I found out that piezo pick ups needed a very high impedance input to keep them from sounding thin. My current setup is a Walter Woods with a Underwood pickup that gives me a incredible sound through my 2 Aguilar cabinets. To obtain the most usable tone and control I suggest anytime a piezo is used to have an amp that has at least a 1 meg. Ohm input impedance. It will give you the most natural sound and easiest control of your over all tone IMHO.
