Why so much sugar coating?

I don't think my opinion was in the wrong thread. The OP asked what effects we liked. I expressed the opinion that I have yet to hear an effect that I liked on bass and I get a warning. Isn't expresses opinions but of why bassists visit this site? My comments were not rude or disrespectful. So basically it come down to semantics.

You're telling him you "dislike" all effects. Get it?

That wasn't his question.

Better to start your own thread.

PS. Complaining about mods in a thread is a violation as well. I suggest you delete your complaint posts and ask that your quoted complaints be deleted as well. Then go and beg for mercy. :atoz:

I wonder why you don't just tell the truth and speak your mind.

Truth is in the mind of the beholder. I suggest that your comments be a bit more nuanced because many a wise person through out history that proclaimed they had the "truth" have run into reality and not come out the wiser. When you are referring to art, pretty much everything is IMO.

Also, IMO learning to edit oneself before speaking "your mind" is an excellent skill to obtain. Just because you think it doesn't mean you have to say immediately in whatever way comes to mind.

If a phaser sounds like poop in guitar solo A either me or the drummer will tell the guitar player that a phaser sounds like poop in guitar solo A. If drummer plays a fill that totally doesn't fit, we'll tell him. If I sing dumb words they'll tell me. If a new bass sounds crap they'll tell me. Other way works too! If something sounds awesome we'll tell each other! Plus we'll record it!
IMO, poop, crap and dumb are about 6th grade level of expression. Immature, unspecific, unconcerned about artistic expression and possibly could be considered examples of being semi-literate in many circles. :atoz:

Since you guys know each other, it's obviously short-hand for "let's try something else". :smug: :ninja:

Making a statement that basically says that everyone should speak and be like me usually doesn't go over very well, especially where freedom of speech is written into our Constitution. Why should I change my speech to make you feel better about yourself?

While speaking, taking into consideration the needs of one's audience is a very important skill to learn. Having a wide ranging vocabulary and modulating one's voice to fit the situation are part of having one's ideas, thoughts, etc. taken seriously. Blurting one's thoughts w/o editing and not being concerned about context/content is usually a quick way to be dismissed.

Alternatively, using statements such as "that doesn't seem to fit here because .... so let's consider an alternative" or "you might consider"... or even the ubiquitous in my opinion or it seems to me may help get one's point across more easily.

mmmm....let's see how I can sugar coat this: :hyper:

They way I conceptualize it is: 2 + 2 = 4 no matter how loud or soft one says it or what tone of voice one uses. Why not make it pleasing to the ear instead of unnecessarily setting up obstacles for oneself?

Or even asking at the outset how other people prefer to be communicated with, even to the exact words others understand and in what context.

Anything that gets you on the same page so that getting your ideas across rather than imposing your communication preferences on others become the goal.

Just my .025....

poop, crap and dumb are words to get around the TB rules. I'm not saying everyone should speak like me. I'm saying everyone should speak their mind.

Personally, if a band can't get past the matching levels stage they're never going to get into the sharing ideas stage. I'm past the matching levels stage, and so is my band. I'm just happy we can share musical ideas and express opinions without fear of the other guy getting butt-hurt.

The reason is that if you do what you are suggesting, you run the risk of violating the rules of Talkbass and could receive a warning from a moderator. I recently received one. There was a forum about What's Your Desert Island Effects? It was basically asking what type of effects people prefer on bass.

This was my response:
" My desert island effect is no effects. I have never heard any that sound good on bass. I like a clean punchy sound with a nice fat bottom end. In my opinion, Marcus Miller has the best tone of any bassist."

Apparently, I violated the rules. A couple of days later, I received a warning from a moderator.

Wow, I don't get that. What rules did you violate? You were simply stating your opinion/experience, right? Didn't sound like you were insulting anyone. What was the warning about?

every group dynamic is different, and what works for your band might wind up demolishing others.....better to try and make it work withthe guys you have by adapting to their strengths and avoiding confrontation.....unless confrontation works for you.....

Nah, telling someone right away you don't like how the song is going is way better than waiting until the song is written and recorded to do it. You might get some flak if you tell them right away... Maybe. You'll sure as hell get more the longer you let it fester. Nowhere have I said be a butthole about anything. Not sure why some of you guys are assuming you can be a total jerk as long as it's under the veil of "better music". That's not the case at all. Just saying you should be able to state your opinions without fear of the other guy crying about it.

if you say so.....but i've seen plenty of evidence to the contrary......one drummer from here i recall had a penchant for punching out his band mates, and i've known others that would simply disappear into a 3 month fog of booze and dope at even the slightest hint of acrimony......

..and those are two folks I wouldn't waste my time with. :D

I see threads all the time about "how should I do this" or "what should I do when"... I wonder why you don't just tell the truth and speak your mind.

Most of the actual issues on this forum aren't really "band management" issues at all. They're "conflict avoidance" issues. Or they're "lack of strategic planning" issues. Or "poor/nonexistent communication" issues. Or even worse: "egos run amok" issues.

In other words, it's people getting into situations that they never imagined - because they never took the time to engage in any extensive brainstorming, never engaged in any real-world reality testing, never established a very clear guiding vision for the band or project, never developed a set of guidelines and policies for governing the band once it became real.

Frankly, 90% of it is Mickey Mouse kid stuff - and a total waste of time... :rollno:

I understand being polite, not walking over people.. However, In my oppinion (see what i did their :P) The people you need to walk over eggshells for the most, are the one's who will be the first to be as blunt as they want and have no problem destroying relationships/friendships , their own or others.

My Ex Singer is a good example, everything was someone else's fault.. He couldn't hit a key, and were tuned wrong.. When I check WITH a tuner, nope, tuned to the wrong HZ, gotta be... I tell him 440, THEIRS YOUR PROBLEM!!! Should be 426.... Really? Cause i've never heard of ANY style of music at 426 HZ, but nope, thats the problem obviously...You can't argue it without straight up saying "Your a lieing douchenugget" Soo at a certain point you stop caring.. If your little world is so fragile I can destroy it with words, i don't wanna play with you. Either get some confidence, grow a pair, or go away, because at some point im going to tell you something you don't want to hear.

Good lord! 426? Maybe in the baroque era.......

That's to be expected in the Effects Board. You were seen as a troll.

Every once and a while someone will post something along the lines of not liking or seeing a use for effects on bass. The problem is that it is the effects board. People are there to talk about pedals and rack gear. If you don't see the gear as useful why bother making a post amongst an audience that disagrees? You were kicking dirt in someone else's playground.
