Why the hate on EHX?

All my first effects were EHX sans a Boss chorus that I got. The plus side of EHX were that they were cheap to buy new (which, at the time, was the only way I bought gear). The problem was that I never found them to sound all that great or to work well in a band setting.

I’m willing to claim youthful ignorance and possible user error, but I also never cared for their enclosures. Once I switched to MXR I never felt the need to go back to EHX. The MXR equivalents sound better to me and work better. IME, YMMV.

The problem with this is, even if I concede your point about MXR sounding better than EHX equivalents, there's just not an MXR equivalent for a good chunk of the EHX line.

(To clarify, there's a lot of EHX stuff I don't like, but their good stuff is really good, IMO)

Great point. One of the cool things about EHX is that they genuinely innovate and look to create new sounds. MXR seems more content at sticking to traditional sounds.

Personally, I don’t think either brand is bad for mass manufactured effects. If I didn’t just buy a Helix LT I would probably give EHX another shot. For better or worse, I think the Helix will keep me busy for awhile

I like EHX a lot and have a quite a few of their pedals. There have been a few I moved on because they didn't work well for my setup. I had a couple crap out a few years ago, but I've also had $200+ higher end pedals kick the bucket as well.

Back when I played guitar I had a Deluxe Memory Man that died within 30 minutes of turning it on. That still didn’t deter me from the brand. I’ve had several pedals from TC Electronic, and even Earthquaker Devices die on me too. Things happen. That doesn’t mean that all pedals by those manufacturers suck. Right now I have an Electro-Harmonix Attack Decay, Nano Battalion, and Bass Clone on my pedalboard. They work flawlessly and even if they did fail, I’d buy them again. Electro-Harmonix simply makes interesting and great sounding pedals that do much more than their equivalents by MXR, Boss, etc..
