I would also try some half-round and/or quarter-round strings as well....which have a flat-like feel.I say get a set and try them out. Worst case...you hate them and you put your old ones back on. But at least you'll know what flats are about.

go into any music store and look at the basses and see how many are strung with flats ... maybe one ... quite often none
With all respect, these days your average music store is one of the last places to get a handle on what everybody is doing

If people wanted to buy basses with flats then the stores would sell them ... they are there to make money ...
For most people basses sound better with rounds ...

Who makes a bright, or atleast relatively bright set of flats that could me some zing if needed?

I think you would like Daddario Chromes , they are fairly bright sounding for flats (ive even heard people slap on them) and stay bright for a long long time
It's odd, I could never get a good tone from flats. Even when they age, they just sound more and more like lifeless rubber bands. I've tried them on P-basses, J-basses, warwicks, you name it. My goal was always the fat, round Jamerson tone, but the best I could achieve was a plunky, toy-like sound. I can actually get the tone I want more easily from dead roundwounds.
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I feel like the only person that dislikes flats!
