why with the hating?

I'm currently 20 years old and in college. I work 3 part time jobs and keep 17 credit hours as a music major and I have a taste for expensive gear. Every time I buy a new bass I get constant bombardment from people saying how ridiculous it is that I'd buy such a thing. I wont get intothe details of all the comments, because well this post is already long enough :)

So my question is, why are people so hateful that I have/buy nice gear? I work really hard for what I have, I dont understand why my playing boutique basses is a such a problem.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

I have had people ask me why I spend so much money on the gear that I have. I prefer Alembic, Spector and old Fenders. I have had people ask why I don't just use a Squier or something in that price range. My answer is always the same, I play what I like and suggest they play what they like. I never criticize anyone for using gear that I wouldn't consider playing regardless of the cost. I am not ashamed of the fact that I make a good living and can afford higher priced gear. I recently had someone wask if I was rich. I said no but I also do not have any bills other than my mortgage and household expenses. I worked hard to pay off credit cards and rarely use them. In my opinion, people who are giving you a hard time are just jealous. Play what you want and don't worry what anyone else thinks.

@meddle - Everyone makes typos.

@papa - I can see that :) I do try to keep money saved up in an emergency fund and put some money into retirement each year. But Gas does get the better of me a alot ^_^ I can see some people thinking I should put it into more worth while things, but a majority of them could probly care less. That is as long as I dont spend it on basses :rollno:

@Art - I'm not the greatest player in the area by any means, but I certainly do a good job. I take my music very seriously.

@James - just gotta look in the right places :) I consider the gigs I have to be one job, I work at the UPS store, And I also do commercial voice overs In my area. All about knowing the right people.

@Lillo - that does make me feel better about myself :)

@Tminus - I've always wanted to try and aguilar rig, how do you like that?

and general response. Yeah I probly shouldn't let it get to me, but it gets old after awhile.

Exactly. It's really none of their business and most likely they are just jealous. If you want a Sadowsky just quit smoking for a year and sock the money in a savings account you don't touch, and then you can get one. Otherwise, cry me a river, brother, too bad so sad.

And the whole avoiding credit cards is a fine idea as well. I don't have any either. Staying away from those vulture companies is what I want in my personal life at this point. And no, my credit is NOT shot, I simply don't want to deal with them. I recently closed my only account, which was paid in full (every month I never gave them a cent of interest) because I choose to live without that crap in my life. I agree with your philosophy 100%.

I agree with you two. Credit cards are the devil! I have 2. One with a $10 recurring payment, and the other I use for gas and pay off each month. This is simply because I'm told you need to have 3 sources of credit for a home loan. I would very much like to have one of those home things one day ^_^

Play what you want to play. If you like cheap basses or expensive one's, there is always someone who is going to deride you for your choice. Let em Piss and Moan, so what. As long as you are happy with your gear and can afford it, it doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks.

I used to want one, but not anymore, after watching half the country lose their homes. I have NO interest at this point. That's why I don't REALLY care what my credit score is. I know, and it's good, but frankly if it went down 20 points, I couldn't care less. It only matters when you go to buy a home or car and I won't be buying a home and I have a new car so I just don't care right now. That's why I was happy to ditch the vulture company and their wares. Even though the account was paid in full, they still sent me a statement in the mail anyway for payment. I was like ok buddy, where do you want the check for 0 dollars and 0 cents to be sent to and will that make you happy? I don't miss their bizarre antics one bit. Life is just too short. Play music and drink beer and enjoy.

That's some solid advice compared to the advice I've been getting from people.
"You should get a job"
"Oh thanks. I never thought of that"

Unfortunately, my chance in the summer to make extra spending money for the year is over. In a few years when all my chemistry education is done. Then I will be making the big bucks!!!!

Maybe I should pick a new major! When I graduate I'm pretty sure big bucks will be no where to be found ;)

I hear ya there. All the jobs I have and have had in the past came from recommendations. I've done alot of free work and kiss assing to get them.

However a friend of mine got 3 jobs just by applying everywhere in town, so I guess that works too.
