why with the hating?

Hey FunkGenerator, i see your Gene Simmons, and raise you Rick James. Now Rick James made some of my favorite funk EVER (I.E. Cold Blooded, Bustin Out, Give it To Me Baby etc), but his bass was a prop. But his stage presence and pyrotechnics distracted people from that fact. I've pretty much got my area on lock not because i "play" like Wooten, but because i "perform" like a tropical storm..HEY THAT RHYMED, GOTTA WRITE THAT DOWN!

When folks ask how much your stuff cost I suggest the ever popular line: "Don't worry about it."

I think this is what I'm going to start doing :) also lowers the chance of theft I'd hope.

Your absolutly right. That is why I love hanging out with the the Wind ensemble. When you say you have a bass that you payed 2500 for they reply with "Wow thats cheap! "My flute costs $40k"

My dad's also finally getting an appreciation for my basses. When I got my first boutique he said "Wow, that sounds better than anything you've played before"

I've found it goes the other way, as well. If you're not rich enough to afford a "name brand" bass, the haters will be on you faster than white on rice. I had a nice Samick 5 string that I worked on setting up, and it sounded and played great, to me, and I went looking for a better amp than the one I had. The sales guy asked what kind of bass I had, and when I told him I had a Samick, I got "Samick?...pfffft. You should play "XYZ"". I wasn't too happy at that, and a couple of years later, I was in a band with the store owner, (and father of the sales guy,) and he wasn't too impressed with that response either.

Now that ya mention it, it's odd how you get bashed for using the cheap gear. Later on, ya have something nice and get bashed that.

What's the best ok bass for metal? :eyebrow:

Spade2you that bass is BEAUTIFUL! What is it?

KenfxJ - I think your right there. The fact that my dads a doctor dosnt help my case. But his philosophy is "You can have anything you want... after you get a job and save for it" I love him for it! Because I worked for my stuff I care for it alot better.

Brian - Thats too funny mate :)

Calbo - I think that should be your band name! and I now want video of you performing lol

Ayce, those samicks are rocking basses man! A guy I know has around 6 PRS guitars and a custom shop fender or 2. And when he plays bass, he rocks a samick.
I hate snobby shop sales guys like that. I remember back when I had my first bass (BC rich warlock.. best bass for metal) I would get that crap all the time. Now I get that crap for having nice basses lol. Go figure.

I've always wanted to try a short scale. How's the B string on that beauty?

Technically 32" scale is medium scale, but same dif. The low B is great! In many TB circles, I was one of the last people clinging on to 35" scale basses. I have a 34" scale CB 6 string and the B was just as good as my 35" scale basses, so I decided to take the plunge. I'm perfectly comfortable on 34" and 35" scale basses, but went with 32" scale to assist with making the upper register much less nasal.

I could see that happening in Chicago, but aren't you from Milwaukee?

Or Detroit too. :hiding:

In all seriousness, you can afford it and you have an American right to buy what you can afford, as long as it's legal, of course. Whatever they say about it, you have it and they don't. Your taste is different than everyone else's taste. Let it go in one ear and out the other and prove your point on stage, not in a debate.

Gear is fun, but it doesn't matter (as long as you get a sound together). What does matter is if you can lay it down. The latter being the case, you would have no cause for concerns. Get a sound, forget what other people think, and concentrate on playing great music.
