why with the hating?

LOL, gotcha. I just know folks who are REALLY religious about Fender stuff.

CBS made for someinteresting stuff. :hmm:

You know, looking at that and really thinking about it, it's hard to believe that CBS was THAT cheap that they were really worried about saving the cost of one bolt on the bass, especially a bolt THAT important. Surely the geniuses there could have found other ways to be more "efficient" (i.e. save money) that wouldn't have messed up the product?

These are the kind of guys who will tell their help they have to wear Depends so as to eliminate restroom breaks in the name of "efficiency". The more extreme sort like this will also mandate a certain color of depends so as to enforce conformity as well.

Anytime a broadcasting company buys out your instrument supplier, don't walk but RUN like hell to do your business elsewhere.

So my question is, why are people so hateful that I have/buy nice gear? I work really hard for what I have, I dont understand why my playing boutique basses is a such a problem.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Jealously, and knowing what's best for everybody but them. Buying an instrument is wasteful, but going to some bar and spending $100 on alcohol and another $100 on pickle cards is just good fun.

Just tell them to p$ss off, and be happy for yourself.

I get grief from non-musicians every time I tell them I bought some music related piece of gear, no matter the cost.
They just don't get it, they think that all basses, guitars, amps, etc are the same and a person should only ever need to own one of anything.

I do try to explain to them partially what it's about as a courtesy, thinking perhaps that they'd benefit from a little knowledge that's currently outside of their world, but they still just don't get it.
They'd rather spend the money on beer and cigarettes, that they can understand, though I can't.
Oh well.

I can't say I've ever gotten any real attitude from other musicians, though.
They're usually pretty interested in any piece of gear they haven't had the opportunity to check out yet.

The OP reminds me of the when I was in college and my RA was telling me about all the things that she would do with $1k+. I told her that the reason she could name so many things she would buy is also the reason that she would never have $1000.

She was pissed. Oh well, I never liked her anyway.

I like this thread a lot! The comment about "opinions are worth what you pay for them" however, is a double-edged sword. If you live by it, you will die by it.

There are MANY reasons why people buy the gear they do. Personally, I don't like Fenders because the necks are too chunky for me. However, I LOVED my original Music Man Sting Ray! I buy gear for what I need it to do.

The only time I ever question someone's choice if expensive gear is when they're not a solid player. If you're on stage with a Wal and you have trouble finding the right notes, that's just a situation of more money than talent. I don't hate that person, though - unless they're overbearing, haughty, conceited and believe they're the best bass player in the world. Then I just leave the concert venue and won't go back to hear the band again.

Haters will never take a day off, so don't worry. One thing i do like if they are hating they are not playing, so that means i will get better than them faster. Don't lose sleep over haters that talk about the great gear you buy. If it inspires you to play more and get better so be it. I got back into BASS and decided to get my first SADOWSKY, when i first got it i knew my skill level would not do the instrument justice, but now that i have gotten way better i am stoked. So stoked i ordered a second one. And i don't gig by the way. I could care less about haters. I will worry about haters when they pay MY mortgage, my Harley payments and all my other bills. Until then let em hate who cares.

Just remember too guys, these same people who b*tch and moan about oh my god you paid 500 bucks for a bass must be nice to be rich, probably drop 50 bucks every Friday night in a tavern for 5 dollar beers (that cost the bar 25 cents) and 7.50 for shots or mixed drinks, and probably smoke 2 packs of cigarettes a day at 5 bucks a pack (at least) so you can do the math and see that's 10 bucks a day or 300 a month for cigarettes, doesn't take long to add up, anyway, these folks quite likely just spend their money in other ways that are far more dubious than musical gear and you aren't whining about that and berating them for it are you? It's their choice, just as it's your choice to buy or not to buy musical gear.

If it makes you feel better, point out that a couple of months of their habit would pay for the gear you just bought. Won't shut them up but it may make you feel better.

^^^this^^^

Ppl hate what they can't control, own or understand; sadly that's how a lot of folks are wired...

^^^and this^^^

My basses have held their value better than my stocks. I'm wishing I had put more in to gear right now. :hiding:

^^^sadly, and this^^^

"If you make your goals ridiculously high then your failures will be better than most peoples successes."

^^^that is a great quote to live by, and true in my experience!^^^

Also, don't let the negative posts here about 'stop whining' bother you either. You're relatively young (lots of dudes here past 40 that can't get over the fact they aren't kids anymore, and resent 'youngsters' for their youth), and figuring it all out (as are the most of us, even 'older' dudes when we are really honest about it), so asking these questions is legitimate, and expecting at least a few intelligent and thoughtful responses here is too.

As far as 'people shouldn't play basses that are more expensive than their skills go'... I call BULLSH*T!!! I had a cheapo Ibanez (not one of the high quality custom shop versions) when I first picked up bass and it was a joy to play as, since its neck was chopstick thin, and its tone was very generic and unarticulated (kinda boomy and mushy actually), it was somewhat easy to fret but masked a lot of my mistakes. It hobbled my progress as a player. Now I have a bass that is waaaaaay beyond my limited ability, as it has a fat/wide neck and is extremely articulate; that is, it amplifies every mistake I make. But, when I play it correctly, it makes such beautiful sounds that I simply want to play it more, and get better at it, so that I can make more beautiful sounds with it. So I practice more to do it (and me) justice. Dig? The mistakes I make on it sound better than some of the 'proper' playing I've heard on (much) cheaper basses, seriously. (Just like your above quote). So don't let the gear snobbies get to you either. They're just a bunch of petrified trees.

If music is what you love and enjoy doing, than you deserve the best gear you think you need. Do you need a $20k custom made bass, probably not; but if its your joy in life to play it, who but you could and should understand the why's and the wherefore's about it. This is just one of the sad things you'll learn about others, but at the same time, one of the wonderful things you'll learn about yourself. Who you are, according to you!

As a Warwick Thumb bass player, I get the old 'hey man, you should get a Fender' from every other yahoo I meet who sees me with it. They don't explain why, except maybe 'that's what all the pros are using', which is, of course, BS. My brother, who's a professional jazz musician (sax), picked up my bass on day and said 'damn!, nice axe... play the **** out of that thing!'. He gets it, as does anyone that understands what making music is fundamentally about: Self Expression.

As long as they aren't hurting anyone (such as depriving their family of necessities) people should feel free to buy and own whatever they want.

There will always be people who might be envious or have different tastes and not care for another person's instruments. Ignoring them is the best approach.

I've played a long time and have had the good fortune to own some incredibly nice basses and guitars. But right now my basses are a modded Squier and a MIJ "lawsuit" P. I have under $400 in both of them put together.

They play great, sound great and look great (IMO.) I've gotten some grief on some forums for owning and playing and advocating inexpensive gear and even had people tell me I'm not a "real" player because I don't own a high-end "big brand name" bass, etc. (although that hasn't happened here on TB.) That kind of sentiment is barely worth a chuckle to me.

My rule of thumb: play what you like and like what you play. That could be some old Peavey you found at a pawn shop for $100 or it could be a boutique custom build that cost thousands. there's plenty of room for both, and anything in between.

"Quality" is subjective and, to me, price figures into the equation very marginally. There's no "right or wrong" regarding what you like and prefer to spend your money on.

I'm currently 20 years old and in college. I work 3 part time jobs and keep 17 credit hours as a music major and I have a taste for expensive gear. Every time I buy a new bass I get constant bombardment from people saying how ridiculous it is that I'd buy such a thing. I wont get intothe details of all the comments, because well this post is already long enough :)

So my question is, why are people so hateful that I have/buy nice gear? I work really hard for what I have, I dont understand why my playing boutique basses is a such a problem.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Why do you care?

Why do you care?

Because he's trying to learn something about people, and hoping others with similar experiences can shed some light on this social phenomenon to help better his understanding of the world he is subjected, and contributes, to.

Here's better question:
Do you really care why he cares, and if so, why aren't you helping? And if not, why did you bother to post anything in the first place? :eyebrow:

(Ummm... Mine is a rhetorical question intended to help support several previous posts regarding human nature). Thanks for playing! :D

More importantly, why do you care?

<edit> I'm tardy - Mark beat me to it.

You're right. I don't get why people do that either...

What the hell do you need an expensive fancy-schmancy bass like that for? It's ridiculous it is that you'd buy such a thing...

Seriously, though...my sig would come in pretty handy for the haters... :D
