why?

why is EVERYTHING on bass more expensive, i bought a bass and basses in general are more expensive than regular guitars, even the strings cost more. im trying to get a bass amp, particularly line 6 brand(because of the distortion) 1st off the amps are way more expensive on bass than guitar, and theres less distortion/effects on bass than guitar that the line 6 bass amps have. all items on bass are more expensive than guitar, why?

1.Bass is bigger than guitar,( more wood )
2. the amps are more powerful ( if you want to heard at least)
3. strings are thicker ( copper, alloy etc. are precious metals and have market value)
Does that explain it?
P.S. save the distortion for the guitarists please!

lower scale, less economic advantage to mass production.

If i want to make 10 widgets, I have to buy the proper tools, get the know how, rent or buy the space, get a license, buy materials, advertise, hire an employee and sell widgets. Each widget carries one-tenth the cost+whatever my profit is.

If i make 100,000,000 widgets, the cost is spread across 100,000,000 widgets, so the cost to produce each goes down(presuming there is a ruch on widgets and they don't just sit on the shelf and taunt me).

If there were 10 bassists to every guitarist, even a 7 string bass would cost less than a quality guitar (IMHO!!!!!)

Average Used Les Paul- $1900-2300
Average Used Les Paul Bass-$1000-1200

A.U. Mesa Boogie Triple Rec Half Stack- $2500
A.U. Mesa 6x10 walkabout - $1200

the list goes on an on ..check fenders, check EBMM, check ibanez.
for the price of a Marshall 100w stack i can get an ampeg rig that will rattle the teeth out of your head AND the bass to do it with. Line 6 may be one of the only major examples of bass over gee-tar pricing..well that and strings. as a former guitar player i have saved several thousand dollars due to the lower cost of my gear.

As for your amp issues ill give you one good suggestion. buy a amp with absolutely no effects built in that has a great tone and volume D.I. and buy a good multi effects pedal board. having a good solid clean tone amp is a solid foundation and with the multi board you will typically have more options and they will porbably organize to your liking and sound better.

so shouldn't it be cheaper since not many people play bass
Huh?

Don't they teach that in school anymore? That's basic stuff right there.

and while were at it, I've always found decent guitar gear to be more expensive. Price a good Marshall Plexi clone vs. a decent bass amp.

naw, cuz you can't make as much money then.

if theres 100,000,000 guitarists and your selling guitars for $1 then thats $100,000,000.

if you have 500,000 bassists, and you sell basses for $1, then you only make $500,000.

so perhaps to build a bass costs the same as a guitar to build, but your not selling nearly as many.

so if your companies expenses are $700,000 (for bass or guitar) you need to increase the price of the bass to cover expenses.

hopefully that made sense....

+1 to more wood, more resources = more $.

Not trying to be a weenie here, but...

Have you happened to price pianos?

The bass is not just a different kind of guitar, it's a bass. Comparing basses to guitars is like comparing them to pianos.

I don't know where you shop, but in my own experience, bass gear is always less expensive than guitar gear (not counting strings). At least it is if you're buying quality gear. Maybe you're comparing the mass-produced crap for guitarists that's aimed for teenage morons to middle of the road and quality bass gear...
