I'll have to check out some recordings - his playing on Letterman is pretty much always terrific. I really admire his ability to work well in so many different styles - that's real musicality.

I think if there was any one bassist that I could have had his (personal) career it would be Will Lee's.

Another great CD to check out is Toph-E & The Pussycats, Live in Detroit. Also available at CD baby. When it was first released it sold out quick.

It's has eight R&B covers with some killer players. Will's pocket is so deep, if you were to fall in, it would take a week to walk out.

We used to go up to Mikhail's on the West Side in NY back in the 70's on Monday nights and Will and Gadd and whoever else was in town would be up there playing. $6.00 to get in and man the music was always happening. Every week best $6.00 you could spend!! Will was and is a great great player!!!!

Best-ever version of "Funky Broadway" is on a Hiram Bullock album, I think the name is From All Sides. Will kicks it off with a great tone and groove and keeps it motorin' all the way to fade!

One I particularly dig is Delbert McClinton's "Never Been Rocked Enough." As a bonus treat, most of the album uses a big chunk of the Letterman Band.

I REALLY was at that show, Front row center. But you can't hear me yelling. I think if you listen close you can "hear" my draw dropped in silent admiration. Will smoked at that show. The other cool thing about that show was Will was followed by Mark Egan with the Larry Corryell trio. It was a GREAT time.

IMO, he sounded as good on that old Fender Jazz....sorry.


In a couple of interviews I've read, Lee talks about how his frankensteined P-bass (the one that had about 8 pickups) almost cost him his career.
At that time, Lee was Billy Cobham's bassist & was supposed to be on the soon-to-be seminal '70s Fusion album, Spectrum.
Lee sez he heard tracks for the album being rehearsed with Lee Sklar...Cobham, in not so many words, told Uncle Will that his sound was crap.

Man, I love Will Lee. He's my main guy. Most of my favorite stuff has already been mentioned. My introduction to him was Spyro Gyra's Freetime. I was like " who is that. Awesome."

I also have a great old VHS of a band he had called Joe Cool with Chris Parker, Rob Mounsey and Jeff Mironov. It's great stuff. Classic Will. He does a solo version of James Browns "I Feel Good" just bass and vocals. Very Cool.
