Smith exhibited the polar opposite of clear thinking. Even he seemed to perceive that after the fact, issuing a formal written (probably by a publicist) apology admitting that he was wrong to have done what he did. An ugly episode.

+1. I'm frustrated by the people I see claiming or implying some kind of equivalence between making an ill-conceived insensitive comment about someone on one hand and assaulting someone on the other hand. No matter how insensitive Chris Rock may have been - literally no matter how bad - striking him was an inappropriate response and was in fact a legal transgression. A crime.

Are people asserting that the standard now should be that if someone insults you, it's OK to assault them if you were really offended? Where in the actual f**k is that kind of thinking going to lead?

Stating a short list of current events and affairs around the world, AKA, the many horrible, bad and much more concerning things happening in the world currently, for point of contrasting concerns, is too political, really?

Are we even allowed to say words such as 'inflation', 'recession', 'unemployment', 'pandemic', 'brutality', 'war', 'crimes', or 'climate change' here? I genuinely want to understand, where does it all begin or end?

Is this a place for educated, informed, mostly mature adults with genuine thoughts and concerns, at all?

I have to spot the irony here... it's no wonder we as a society have devolved to the point that one man slapping another on the stage at the Academy Awards takes the position of dominate news story.

So much superficiality. What a shame.

Yes, you can speak in generalities about world conditions. This is not what you did in your post that was edited. You mentioned specific world/social conditions that are unfortunately steeped in political controversy as well as politicians by name. Quite a bit different than how it is presented here.

At this point, it is better that we return to the conversation of the Oscars, Wil Smith, Chris Rock, etc.

By that vague measure, there's no clear end. Even the current IRS 1099-K issue with Reverb and Ebay, a current and stickied thread here on TB could be deemed steeped in political controversy.

I apologize for naming a Russian dictator and war criminal here.

Actually what the First Amendment says is

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

The right of private entities to control speech within their boundaries has been upheld dozens of times. Your employer will not allow you to post negative comments on the company website. A Christian university is allowed to forbid a speaker from espousing the worship of Satan. The GOVERNMENT can't do those things, but private individuals CAN. The case law on this goes all the way back to 1789. There's no interpretation, this is settled law.

My suspension sense is tingling.

On another note, I do want to address one thing that has come up recently here, and that's the idea that people shouldn't express opinions or emotional responses about topics unless they are The Most Important Issue Of The Day.

We all know there are major things going on in the world that are more pressing and heartbreaking than what happened at the Oscars. But attempting to silence discussion of the issues around this event by invoking More Important Issues is a clever little bit of gaslighting.

People have a right to be moved by whatever it is that has moved them, and the discussion around this has touched on many issues that have social value. So let's not do the kneejerk thing of "there are so many more important things going on in the world," OK? We already know that. Sometimes we need a BREAK from those things.

IMO, the long term downside for Will Smith will be minimum as the general pubic has very short memories. As far as the film industry goes, Will Smith creates hugh amounts of revenue for the industry so he will not be blackballed. It goes back to the old saying, "Follow the Money" and Will Smith will just get a small slap on the wrist, no pun intended, which will mainly be for public show that Hollywood is sensitive to the violence issue.
Then back to business as usual.

At this point it has been talked to death.

you can see in the video where Chris Rock tell his joke. You can see Will laughing and the camera goes to Jada rolling her eyes. The the camera is back at Chris. The he comes on the stage slapping him.

to me it is obvious that Jada told Will that it wasn’t fun and should do something or else. So he did because she dominates him.

also a lot of people said it wasn’t acceptable behavior. Ok i agrée but at the same time … our culture is around violence… you can get a gun in a Walmart, every show are stupid violent and everyone deal with their problems with violence. But then you should not do it ever.
