I get the wanting to be involved and participating part, I prefer it myself, but moods change, at least mine do. I like to chill and enjoy, take it in, ya know?

I don't take AS MUCH pleasure in watching most things I do and enjoy, but it's still great...in a different sort of way.

There's less difference when you KNOW you can't play the game.

I played one year of football in high school - about 1966. All I can say is that on a good day, I was average for the JV team I was on. I played intramural basketball in high school - and I was incompetent beyond belief.

And that was more than 40 years ago.

I'm perfectly content to watch the college guys play football and basketball. There's no "rather be out there" for me. I don't belong out there.

Once we get into late fall/early winter, there's college basketball, which is NOT full of egomaniac NBA multi-gazillionaires who don't play defense and didn't stay in college long enough to learn the basics of the game, and therefore college is a lot more fun to watch.

If you asked people whether they prefer the wholesome fundamentals of college ball or the over-the-top athleticism and sheer intensity of pro ball, the only people who would answer the former are aging white dudes who feel threatened or alienated by 8 foot tall African-American behemoths flying around the court and annihilating their opponents in the paint (which is undeniably a better show of athleticism) or small-market basketball fans who have no option for watching pro ball.

Everyone else would miss the NBA. I mean, you'd literally have to prefer boring sports to say otherwise.

Put it this way: Do you prefer the NFL where players make a lot of money or high school football where players make none? On the metric of "whoever makes the least money makes the more interesting game" high school football wins. On the metric of "I want to see some goddamn balls-to-the-wall football" which is the rubric everyone who's being honest uses, you'd pick NFL.

Your boring sport may be my favorite. My boring sport may be your favorite. The assertion is unsupported by fact or argument, and therefore contributes nothing but opinion. That's cool, but don't assume that your opinion is held by everyone else. It's not. Relative to the topic, there is no possibility of making an accurate statement that "everyone" likes or dislikes anything.

And I prefer college football to NFL football, as the commercial aspect and ceaseless marketing of the NFL is becoming very tiresome to me.

Note that in the very first post, I made it quite clear that I'm not an NBA fan. The question asked is whether YOU will miss the NBA. I won't.

And in what regard is "what we learned today" in this thread different from hundreds of other rhetorical and completely irrelevant-to-music threads that are posted every week? I see no reason that should be an issue in whether one participates...that's a matter of personal choice.

Bottom line in this thread so far - there are less than a handful of posters who will actually miss the NBA. Most of those responding say they won't miss it. I'm actually a bit surprised at how lop-sided the responses have been.

I do get what you're saying. I am a HUGE basketball fan, and the NBA is where I feel more at home. It may be that I'm younger, but having a fantasy league or two going throughout the season with friends from school or work makes the league fun for me to actively follow and be engaged in.

That's completely aside from the dynamic playoffs we just had, and I'm extremely excited about the number of young players who are great to watch and I think that taking one year out of their career while they're at their best physically would be a shame.

It has been great to watch the Celtics do well over the last few years. I've caught a few playoff games on TV, but the NBA AND NHL could disappear forever and I wouldn't miss them at all.

I do suspect that a work stoppage is going to give the NBA a huge black eye...and that the damage is going to take a very long time to recover from.

What a crock. Have you been to college? If so, was your school any good at basketball? That's a big factor for some people.

My alma mater's won two national titles and been to the Final Four two other times in the past 15 years. Believe me, that's fun to watch. Oh yes, the teams that won the titles were quite fundamentally sound AND athletic. Two of the guys from those squads are now key starters on their NBA teams.

Beyond that, it often comes down simply to personal taste, not some racial angle. I like the NBA fine and I will miss it, but it isn't inherently more exciting than college ball. Know what's boring? 15 pick'n'rolls in a row. Know what else is boring? A couple dozen clear-out iso plays per game. That's the NBA sometimes. In college hoops, you get to watch a wider variety of offenses. And the defenses are sometimes better, too.

That's a great point and can apply to the NBA too. I think people in LA are bigger NBA fans than people in Toronto.

It's technically suppose to be the opposite. In times of recession people often look for entertainment to get their minds off of their issues.

That said, greed and increased prices for tickets and sports channels has limited the ability for people to actually gain access to live sports.

Franchises and players need to learn that they are no longer worth the high salaries they were once paid. Until they figure that out, I'm skeptical of how long professional sports will remain without more lockouts.

So no, I can't say we'll agree that baseball is boring. It's certainly a methodical, slower-paced game, but it's one where every pitch counts and every swing counts. I realize that isn't fast enough for many people - and it's one reason that viewing numbers are higher for the NFL than for MLB.

For the good of the NBA, I also hope they get it worked out.

I went to a Rays game Saturday. For some reason baseball feels right whenever I watch. I can't think of another word to describe it.
