Will you miss the NBA?

Why?

Not everyone wants to go to college, they can't be forced to go. It's not the "minor leagues" of the NBA.

Please note that my comment you quoted begins "IMO kids who enter college...". I intentionally omitted mention or reference to kids who do not enter college. If they're 18, I have no problem with them going to the NBA, provided someone wants them. But once they commit to college, I cannot condone attending one or two years and then bailing out. If you're going to enter college, stay long enough that it's worthwhile - and give your body time to mature.

But college ABSOLUTELY is the minor leagues of the NBA, just as college is the minor leagues of the NFL. There is no possible question that college performance is the primary way that most (not all, but the vast majority of) athletes demonstrate their potential to professional sports leagues. This is especially true for the NBA and NFL.

MLB is an exception to this because they have farm teams that literally are minor leagues. This farm structure doesn't exist for the NBA or NFL.

I agree with most you said, except that basketball players need time to develop their bodies. in the NFL, this is VERY important as it is a true contact sport. In the NBA, high school guys can make a big impact right away and it's not a contact sport like football. And it's obvious...direct bone crushing impact for possibly underdeveloped bodies or incidental contact playing basketball.

So the question is this...should NBA prospects be allowed to leave college earlier just because they are more ready physically?

Also, you are forgetting that the reason that college is the "minor leagues" of these sports ONLY for the players that NEED to prove their potential. Not all do. So how do you treat that? Let talented guys pass because they will probably have a good career, while mediocre chancers stay to "prove their worth"?

And further more, you could easily argue that the CFL and Arena leagues are the developmental leagues of football and is the reason why the NBA has the D league. That is their minor leagues.

Good questions...let me note that the "early outs" from college are one reason that the NBA is losing popularity with many fans.

You're right that college is the minor leagues for those who aren't ready after high school - which is 99.9% of everyone. So it's not really "only" those. Kids who are anywhere near ready for the NBA out of high school are extremely rare. But if they want to go - let 'em go. The other 999 out of 1000 (or 9999 out of 10,000) benefit by taking a college route of some kind.

You're also right that there is a difference in the need to mature before going pro - the NBA is more forgiving. However, many basketball players are still growing and maturing, and many of them need the time in college to develop technique.

Given that the most common path is to enter the NFL first, then not quite make it and head to the CFL or Arena league, I don't buy them as any kind of minor league in the sense of preparing players for the NFL. Nothing wrong with either league, and more power to the guys who want to keep playing, but it's very uncommon for players to move INTO the NFL from them. The movement is almost exclusively the other way around...so if they are minor leagues, they're for players on the way out of the NFL, not on the way in.

Well, this I don't agree with. Durant came out as a freshman. Many guys are contributing right away. Letting guys come out early has made the league younger, more athletic and interesting. I'm not sure which source you are quoting, or if this is your opinion, but I think the NBA is more interesting than ever, and it's TV ratings prove it.

Hey tasty, I LOVE that tag line!! Good one.

You're right that there are guys who contribute right away - just not most of them. It's a matter of personal taste, but I find that too many of the kids coming out early get into the superstar mode, which is something I personally dislike about the NBA.

I haven't tracked its TV ratings, so you got me there. I do think they're going to take a huge hit when they get their stuff together and start playing again.

I was a big basketball fan in the days of showtime, bad boys, Bird, Drexler and Jordan. The NBA has gotten boring to me. Too many time outs and obligatory shots of someone that's just committed felony battery on camera whining at the ref going "who, me?". I tried to watch a few playoff games this year but as soon as I flipped to it they were going to break.

That's the picture I have of the NBA, which I know is unfair in most cases. I didn't watch any of the NBA playoffs. The only reason I'd watch an NBA game is if someone from my alma mater was playing for them - that would be Klay Thompson who went to the woeful Golden State Warriors - and they're not likely to be on TV around Denver. Not that I'll be checking.

What I struggle with sports-wise is the NFL Sunday Ticket, which is now around $300 a season. I keep telling myself that if I'm going to see Green Bay and Seattle I need to keep it, and it costs no more than attending one live game.

My daughter works for the DISH network in Denver, and if they had the Ticket I'd change to them - but no joy. they just made a silly bid for the ticket, which forced DirecTV to make a ridiculous bid to win the contract. I'll feel that in the wallet next year, unless I drop the Ticket.

I've never enjoyed watching sports on tv except on rare occasions. My view has always been this, "Why watch it when I can actually go outside and play it?"
Same here. Watching people having fun playing just makes me jealous that I'm sitting on the couch.

I don't follow sports though anyway, I have other passions I live through vicariously. So, no I am not affected by any of the lockouts.

ya know, there are probably things you can sign up for that let you stream all the games online. A friend of mine did that with baseball when he cut his cable.

I use Link Removed

I have HDMI to my 46" and is sufficient for most events.

I don't have cable, but recently found a powerful antenna that gets me about 15 PERFECT HD channels for free too. and I didn't know this, but HD is supposed to be better over live air.

This is exactly like saying, why watch someone play bass when I can play it myself?

So if you are a sports fan, which it sounds like you are...you can only enjoy it if you play it?

I don't get it...

Hey, cool! I work with online technologies and I'll check the link. Always nice to earn about options.

Haha, but that's exactly it. Why do the passive version of the activity when you have the chance to do it yourself?

I'd juxtapose watching sports on TV vs. playing them with your friends to watching porn on your computer vs having sex with an actual woman. Sure it gets the job done and can be enjoyable, but it's no where near as enjoyable as the actual activity ;)

So you don't enjoy watching [insert the name of your favorite bass player here] play the bass?

I love playing basketball, and I am pretty good, but I will never be as good as Kevin Garnet, so why not enjoy watching him play?

Well, masturbation can actually be more pleasurable, since you don't have to worry about getting her off, or hear her say silly things and effort is not required...ya know what I mean?

Not participating can still be ok!

As I said ;)

If I could choose between sitting and watching a game for 3 hours or actually going out and playing the same game for 3 hours I'd pick playing it every single time.
