win7 and latency

so, i got win7, thing is fast, pretty and simple. i love it. except one thing. latency on mic in. i practice bass by plugging it into mic in in soundcard. on XP there were no problems. but on win7 there is horrible latency like 0,5 seconds or more that means no way at all to play songs. i tried bunch of stuff, newest drivers, ASIO4ALL drivers, i disabled "listen to this device" option (i heard that helps) but that only muted my bass.
i also tried pluggin bass in line-in. same thing. i tried with older soundcard (ymaha aw774) , same thing.

Im getting around 4ms using a M-Audio 24/96 card under W7.
I assume if you are using ASIO4ALL then you dont actually have proper ASIO drivers or soundcard. Maybe you need to get something that has these drivers.

What hardware do you have? CPU speed, dual-core/quad-core, RAM, cache, etc.? You may need to upgrade those. Which version of Win 7 are you running? Check out the minimum requirement for that version and then multiply the CPU speed by two and RAM by four, based on your usage.

Also, have you tried running the app you're using in XP Mode?

I've done a little recording on my Win 7 machine and it plain flies! several channels in (6 I think) and latency was 7ms. Don't think it's an OS problem.

What soundcard are you using now and what do you use to record?

i have 3,4GHz Intel dual core, 2gig ram, and ati radeon HD2400 GPU. everything else works smooth. it's Win7 Ultimate. and soundcards are onboard realtec HD, and yamaha AW774. both worked fine under XP. i see all around net that people have the same problems. i did install latest win7 drivers but nothing helped. it seems i'm gonna have to install WinXP for bass playing and leave win7 for everything else.

The M audio cards have the proper drivers so yeah, they (now) work fine.
There was an issue with the audio system not allowing the PC to shut down but thats been ironed out now.

I'm running a beta driver from August. I'm hoping the official release is coming soon. Not that I'm having issues, but I'd feel better knowing it's an official released driver.

As someone already pointed out, the asio drivers may be unnecessary. At least older realteks don't support asio or at least have several problems with them. These problems may go away sooner or later (I'd put my money on later) when the win7 starts to get tweaked properly.

I did a quick google and there seems to be more people with the similar problems to what your experiencing. Only tip I was able to find was to run the realtek driver installation in vista compatability mode. That helped for one person. But then again, I only spent a couple of minutes looking it up.

Same here. I was using the stop audio .bat file before and that worked fine but its nice not to have to fiddle with these things.

i did it!

so anyway, you have to turn off the "listen to" in the recording device, BUT i didn't see the mixer and there, the mic in was muted. so when you turn it on there is no latency on mic in. seems like this is the old XP "sound ruoute" and listen to device is some new "all around route"

Without trying to sound like a computer geek...I would say that 2gig of RAM does not cut the mustard for Win7. Win7 uses about 1gig by itself if I'm not mistaken.

I bought a new machine on Thursday with the launch of Win7...and it came with 6Gig of RAM.

More RAM is always the most important upgrade to any system. At least in my experience.

Im not denying more is better but ive been running W7 with 2GB of RAM all year without any problems.
As im sticking with x86 there isnt any point getting more than 3GB anyway.

you can buy mobo's now that handle 24 gigs of ram.. sure you could have done that before, but only on server and workstation platforms and you would have really only one good source.. Tyan. My current machine is maxxed at 8 gigs. Im ready to go way past 16 now that Kontakt 4 is out.
