Windows 8 Beta

My audio drivers freak out here and there, but so far Consumer Preview is actually pretty cool. I sorta miss the start button, but you can kinda fake it in the taskbar.

I was kinda hoping that the newest beta of Visual Studio would work. but I can work with Vs2010. I havent yet tried the windows phone IDE on Win8.

And Metro / Desktop work pretty well with dual monitor setup, could be a little better, but its getting there.

After being on the Windows 7 test team (OU IT was one of the groups responsible for testing Win 7 Enterprise) and participating in way too many Google tests I'm gonna sit this one out. Besides, my HDD is too small to dual boot efficiently....

Also, you XP guys have about 2 more years of support:

As a total Microsoft and Windows fanboy, I love W7. That said, I'm still running XP on three of my machines - my studio laptop, my tablet and my netbook.

I am interested in W8 though as I have a Windows Phone (running Mango). So Jady, let us know how that Beta works out. I'll be getting a new laptop in a few months and I might wait until 8 is on general release.

Haven't looked much into W8 yet but I'm glad to hear that that whole "App View" doesn't completely replace the desktop. So the start button is gone? I'm guessing they replaced it with something to access programs more fluidly? How's that work?

Big fan of W7 myself so I probably won't be making the switch just yet but I'm interested for sure.

If you're in the "app view" (don't know the name either) or you hit the Windows key, as soon as you start typing, it starts showing you matching apps.

I saw part of the presentation this week and thought it was a clever use of something users already do (Windows key + start typing).

I think Windows 8 is going to be a great OS for tablets and other touch devices....but for all of us without those capabilities, which is still probably a huge chunk of users, I feel Microsoft is just forgetting about. Sure tablets and touch seems to be the wave of the future, but I can see Windows 8 being a failure in the general consumer desktop and laptop computer market and possibly not very well adopted in businesses as well. There are some radical changes and I get change is inevitable, but I personally am not impressed with Windows 8 (the preview or beta). I found it to be kind of dumb using it on a desktop and hard with a mouse. So unless they make some different improvements between the beta, (release candidate if there is one) and final release I will be sticking with Windows 7. You would think Microsoft would learn from past OS and business mistakes...:rollno:

Enough ranting though...

I will echo the love for 7, they really did finally get it right.
My prediction:
Windows 8 = ME + Vista + phone/tablet

You XP fans should really consider trying 7, quantum leap especially in the multimedia realm.

Mind if I ask for a few reasons why you found it disappointing?

Personally, the idea of an "app view" on a platform that doesn't have standardized support for gestures (ala OSX Lion) sounds a bit silly to me but that isn't to say that it can't work or that the OS itself is bad. I wouldn't know anyway since I haven't actually tried it but I will soon.
