Windows Vista??

I am making my own metaphorish ideal.

Vista = PS3 - Very expensive, but many people are loyal and say it is worth it.

Mac OSX = Xbox 360 - Came out first, proven to be a good deal, significantly different than Vista (a PS3), but yet very similar

Linux OS's = Wii - Very innovative, arguably the most user friendly, and an excellent thing to play around with.

I'd agree with him. It takes a little getting used to, but once you're accustomed it IS more user friendly...and not we both said user friendly, not beginner friendly. Installing software using apt-get is SOOOOO much easier than anything windows has to offer. Productivity on linux is greater because everything is customisable. Once you're set up with linux it IS far easier to use than Windows.

I'm willing to believe that, and I'd love a return to the good old days of PC owning where the hardware and software are two entirely different things, i.e. I could run various versions of DOS, or Basic, or Fortran, etc on the same IBM AT.

Problem. Sonar is the thing I use most on my computer (Oblivion being a close second :smug: ). Although some of my audio hardware has Linux drivers available, not all of it does, and I'm not giving up Sonar for anyone, or anything.

Vista it is, for me. I choose my OS based on what I need it for, and Vista has improved audio capabilities that Sonar 6 will support in the 6.2 patch. Claims of ease-of-use and better performance mean nothing if the apps I need to run won't work on that OS.

For those people who are thinking Vista has cool 3d effects (or those who think the linux desktop is ugly) here's a video of MY desktop, taken about 3 minutes ago :)

This is on a 1.5GHz Celeron-M laptop, 512MB RAM (below the recommended Vista spec). It was at 1280x800 res but I've reduced it to around 640x480 to reduce video size. I'm running KDE as my window manager (we have a choice in Linux ;)) and I'm using the Beryl/AIGLX 3d desktop. The video is close to 4MB and lasts around 5 minutes.

Oh, and it's in the patent free OGG Theora codec (because it was the default for the program I used). WMP should play it ok. The video is slightly jumpy because recording seems to affect the effects, but when I'm not recording it's all vveeeeery smooth.

I thought about getting Vista to run dual platforms on my Intel Powered Mac but I think the new OSX release this spring will take any of those desires away. Again its Windows trying to copy Mac and not making enough headway to be worthwhile for long.
Oh and my Dell Windows machine I'll leave as XP till after the bugs are worked out and then maybe then I'll switch just for the added media center benifits. Who knows, I might just use my Windows machine again.
