Windows Vista??

Not in a hurry. I'm very happy with Linux as my all-purpose OS, and I boot into XP for my music programs (Tracktion, Live) and pretty much nothing else. I've gotten XP running smoothly enough that I don't want to mess with it.
I do not feel like giving Micro$oft any more money. I don't want to support their monopolistic mediocrity. I feel like their offerings are more geared towards the need of their shareholders than their end users.
What the release of Vista really means is that a bunch of people will hurriedly ditch perfectly good computers with decent specs that aren't quite up to snuff for Vista's minimum requirements...perfect candidates for Linux boxes.

Vista appears to be all about looks and security for those who have no idea what they are doing. My Uxtheme modded XP desktop looks pretty much just like it, and I know to stay off the pron sites. I am going to try to skip this generation of Windows.
To be fair, regarding the bolded part, that's 90% of the market.
And, if you work in a business that provides you with a PC in the next 10 years, you'll likely use Vista.
Statistically speaking of course.

Luck seems to be plentiful with us Windows users. Strange.
According to you Mac'ers, I surely should have had an plethora of STD's by now.
I plan to build a new PC probably around the end of this year, or the first of next year. I will get Vista then, but not before. The only reason I will get it then is to take advantage of Dx10. But I'm content with XP for now.
Knock on wood, no STDs for me either with XP. I run Adaware, Spybot and AVG Anti-Virus. All free.
No STD's for me....with the added benefit of no Adaware, no Spybot and NO Anti-virus...and of course no cost
You guys really make it out to be bigger than it is.
As RWP said, I only run about three free programs like he does, and all is fine. Honestly? Those are just precautions too, I don't really run into any problems at all.
You Mac guys just love having something to pick on, meanwhile you guys have a bunch of junk software.
I'm not a mac guy, I use linux...
Certainly no junk software, nice and fast, nice and secure, no viruses, no spyware, no adware, does exactly what I want it to and looks much, much better than both Mac and Windows. And is FREEEEEE (in all senses of the word). Hell, if I played recent games I might think differently, but I don't.
It might not seem like a big deal to you, but it makes me laugh when I watch windows users turn their PC on, have the desktop appear and then they still have to wait 5 minutes for their anti-whatever software to load in the system tray before they can use it. As soon as MY desktop is up, it's usable.
I don't get why windows users put up with it all the way they do.
A properly written OS should not need defragmenting.
It should not be succeptible to viruses. It should do only what the user wants it to and it SHOULD NOT limit what you can do with your own PC (DRM I'm looking at you here...). And it's only going to get worse for windows, not better, just you wait til you read what Microsoft has just patented....in the future you're going to have separate licenses for all the parts of your OS, not one license to cover all. It's gonna be the biggest invasion of privacy and limitation of use you'll ever see. And you'll just accept it. Oh well.

If you are not an experienced and smart Windows user, you will have many difficulties. Personally, I am not the stereotypical windows user, I do not have problems, I don't wait 5 minutes for anything, my computer performs fantastically.
On my Linux machines, I am also very happy with those. Some things are a bit buggy, and some of my software and games will not work, but that is something you deal with. I find Linux and Windows to be a perfect combination and compliment each other well, when both are properly used.
