Windows Vista??

I'm not a mac guy, I use linux...

Certainly no junk software, nice and fast, nice and secure, no viruses, no spyware, no adware, does exactly what I want it to and looks much, much better than both Mac and Windows. And is FREEEEEE (in all senses of the word). Hell, if I played recent games I might think differently, but I don't.

I do play recent games, hence the reason I use windows. If more companies started releasing linux clients for their games, I might consider making the switch.

It might not seem like a big deal to you, but it makes me laugh when I watch windows users turn their PC on, have the desktop appear and then they still have to wait 5 minutes for their anti-whatever software to load in the system tray before they can use it. As soon as MY desktop is up, it's usable.

If it takes that long to load up a desktop, that person has way to much crap in their system tray. When I log on, my desktop is usable immediately. And I do have and anti-virus software running.

I don't get why windows users put up with it all the way they do.
A properly written OS should not need defragmenting.
It should not be succeptible to viruses. It should do only what the user wants it to and it SHOULD NOT limit what you can do with your own PC (DRM I'm looking at you here...). And it's only going to get worse for windows, not better, just you wait til you read what Microsoft has just patented....in the future you're going to have separate licenses for all the parts of your OS, not one license to cover all. It's gonna be the biggest invasion of privacy and limitation of use you'll ever see. And you'll just accept it. Oh well.

I agree that defragmenting is a solution for a problem that shouldn't exist in the first place. And there are definitely advantages to using linux. As far as the virus issue goes, it wouldn't even be an issue if people ran XP the way it should be ran, as a limited user rather than an administrator. If everybody logged onto their linux desktop as root, they would be just as susceptible to viruses (though no one writes viruses for linux).

I don't like the all the DRM stuff that I've heard rumors about concerning Vista, but I don't know all the details yet. I'll reserve judgement at this point, and see what comes out.

Now, for heaven's sake, there's been like four different threads lately, dealing with linux vs. windows, mac vs. PC, etc. Can't we all just get along?????

Yeah, my system is up and running very quickly.

It's also one hell of a performer. No crap running in the background. OS, apps, and data on separate HD's. Clean install of XP Pro (without all the bloatware garbage in the background). And multiple tweaks to squeeze every inch of performance out of it. I do love my current XP box.

I wouldn't trade my system for a brand new one with much better specs.

Out of the box, mine had no OS on it! Then it had slackware until I got bored, then it had ubuntu, then kubuntu, then kororaa, then kubuntu...I get bored a lot!

i've been using apple computers for about 7 years now and have never had one virus, never had one crash, never had one popup add, never had to have any service work, never had to download any drivers for new hardware (printers, m-audio mobile pre, etc.), never had to hit ctrl-alt-del, etc. i've had 2 PCs in that time period as well and have probably had all of those problems at least a half a dozen (or more) times per machine.

i'm not gonna go into tech specs because that's a circular argument... but as far as ease of use and reliability, i'm a mac guy until microsoft does something drastic.

yep im the same

the computers i use most often are 7 (yes really) years old now

Compaq Armada M300s

600Mhz, 320MB RAM and a gutted out tweaked version of windows server 2003

fast and stable

uses about 45MB RAM standing still (only 13 processes running at startup)

even tweaked within an inch of its life Vista uses 240MB standing still and will have 25+ services running in the background

i wouldnt swap them for a new equivalent if it had to have Vista on it
