Windows Vista??

NOT! I tried it out, it's OK, just a fancier interface, for the most part. If it comes on a PC I buy, fine, otherwise, I'll just stick with Windows 3.11....

I went to one of the launches here in town. Looks cool, gives me a reason to upgrade my machine, and it has a few cool features as a business workstation: if users modify their settings such as disabling the firewall against IT rules, Vista will kick them off the network, re-enables the firewall, and then let them join the network again. That will be a wonderful tool against tinkering users yes I work in IT, and everybody plays the "I am better at the computer thingy than my IT person"

XP works fine for me so I'm not in either. Doesn't sound like there is a great deal of interest. Poor Billy . . .

I've been using Vista for a couple of days now. As a student of BU, I have access to Business Edition for free. In any case, after a fresh install and some time to muck around with it, I really like the GUI enhancements, particularly the functionality that was jacked from OSX. It took sometime to get used to way folders are displayed (not to mention the fact that there is no "my computer" or "my" anything anymore) and the User Authority Control (or whatever it is known as) that is really stringent about what gets installed where and what goes on the desktop.

I run an Athlon 64 3400+ with 2GBs of memory, and an nVidia 6800GT and Vista runs rather sluggish, particularly with games that require a lot of machine power. As of now, I've only had one discrepancy with my sound card's drivers. I installed them direct from creative and have had some lag as a result of multi-channel sound. It would really choke up my PC.

In any case, I would not recommend Vista to anyone other than the cutting-edge enthusiast that does not mind a sluggish start to something very different from Microsoft. I run Vista and OSX and it's fun to switch between the two.

I'll wait till SP2 comes out or something. New Windows OS's are scary and need to be beaten with service packs to tame them.

Gees, sounds like Vista has really departed from the old Win-doz theme. NO MY COMPUTER! Couldn't handle that.
Hope XP is supported for a while.

I'm up in the air. The big thing stopping me from trying it is the hardware limitations of my computers, and I'm NOT buying a new computer to upgrade to something I don't NEED.

I've thought about switching to Macs, but their hardware is so expensive. I'd certainly consider something a little more Macrosoft.

Been running it for few months now as my second os (Linux being first)... I would wait atleast for sp1... XP is still better then Vista IMO, Vista is very pretty and has few cool looking intefaces/features but some espects of it are very annoying. Kind of like XP was before SP1/SP2. If you really want Vista, i would wait for SP1, if not stick with XP.

Alas, I think I shall soon have to part ways with my trusty WIN2k OS. I'll wait until I hear a few more good things about Vista before I decide whether to go with XP or Vista.

I'm interested in giving it a go, as the new OSX inspired interface elements sound interesting (Speaking as a recently converted mac fanboy). Still, doubt my inner nerd will ever allow me to move back to a Microsoft OS.

OK I have to come clean. I HATE upgrading. Until about a month ago I was still running a PIII 300Mhz on Win 98. It worked, I knew it inside out and all was fine. Then the mother board started to go so I figured now was the time. XP, Pentium D 2.66G, 1 G RAM, and a new Nvidia 7600 card. MAN what a difference.
So now Bill wanted to sell me Vista and I just got XP??? Don't think so.....

Don't, pretty much right now, there is nothing on vista that makes it any better then XP.

I am on the fence. If there are no true benefits for it, I prefer the interface of XP and would rather performance than flashy new features and a slowed response time.

If I want flashy, I can just use Beryl on Linux which owns the hell out of anything Vista or OSX can do, plus it takes up such little resources.

We'll see.

Now, I heard a lot of discussion about how Vista would not be compatible with Direct X 9 and below type video cards.

I currently have a Radeon 9200 Go, the laptop eddition. Will it not be able to work on Vista? Or Can I just not play any pre-direct X 9 games.

(It might be a different version of direct X, give or take one. Im not completely up to date with stuff that new.

What gets me is the price. Over here the upgrade edition is £95 and the Ultimate Edition (the one that's nearly as good as Linux ) is a whopping £350. £350 for WINDOWS?! The only windows that should cost that much are double glazed.
