Winter Build Jazz Project

Hey, I was wondering if when you finish, this will be a made in the U.S.A, bass guitar which can be sold in stores for 1200 dollars or is it more of a sentimental value kind of thing? In stores you are obviously paying for the completed setup. Also, you do all the electronics yourself?, including pickups and knobs?

I do this for fun, excitement, learning, therapy, to play the darn thing. It is not going to be my only bass. I do not intend to sell it for profit, it is for my enjoyment only and you TB members.

The pickups came with the kit, as well as the electronics. The control is pre-wired, but I plan to rework that as well.

Quote from Beej: "No, it won't. Its a mass produced kit that has been mildly modified and finished at home. Its all about the sentiment, and likely won't have any improved value when finished... "

I do this for fun only, but it will hardly look like the Jazz kit it started from....mildly modified...not.
I'm having a blast doing this project!

Update: Poly coat #6 tonight.

No offense taken, But I really don't think I would cut this much wood off of my '69 Ric 4001.....new PG would be a mild mod for that bass.
Thanks for your opion tho, all are welcome.

YES! good call on making it a fretless. Are you going to coat the fingerboard with ca glue?
Not sure yet, probably poly for now,it's gonna be a players bass, if it needs work from time to time that's fine. But...I am very glad I decided to pull the frets.

The last time I used a fretted bass at rehersal(was work on my fretless bass), I was making mistakes....:spit:....the guitar player summed it up perfectly. Those "peskey" frets were getting in my way!

I decided to stain the neck cherry like the body.
I also put a very dark stain on the fingerboard, it still did not cover the old fret lines(prob the glue). but does look nice.
Fretboard has glare or dust in the pics.

Displayed on some fine steel door frame material!

And still putting on coats of poly on the body with a light 0000 steel wool sanding between coats.

Well..... I had this waterslide decal from another project(you get 2) and I couldn't help my self.

I wanted to put a logo/name on the headstock. I looked into a waterslide on bEay and they didn't have the fonts I wanted....

So, instead of Frankenbass or something like that, I put this on it...and...I kind of like it! If I don't like it later, I will do something else.

And...I'M getting closer on the finished body. It is deeping in color with each coat.

I'm still having lots of fun!

Thanks, getting close to start putting on the hardware.

awesome, looking forward to seeing the updates... just to clarify the "(probably never will)" part of my last post was a comment upon my laziness and general lack of money not a throw away idea or comment of disrepute towards your bass shape, I really like it :)

Just thought that my previous post sounded a little two faced,

I didn't take that way at all. The kit cost $105.00, altho I did get another PU for the neck position. Thanks for your interest!

Rubbed the body and neck out with 0000 steel wool, then some wax, put on machine heads, and a dry fit....

Machine heads not spaced too evenly....headstock came with holes pre-drilled.....oh well

Dry fit.... The body still has a little woodgrain showing here and there....but the wood is so soft....I'm sure it will be showinfg some bruises and dents soon enough.....so...let's play it!

I hate myself for it, but I'm almost tempted to sell my EB stringray fretless and just make my own fretless...Curse that sense of satisfaction! Curse you!

...Or just have two fretlessess.

By the way, how much was the shipping for you? I'd imagine it'd be more expensive to have it shipped to Canada. Loving the build, by the way!!

Sorry for "curse":) I'm sure the stingray is a "better" instrument. I just wanted to have a project for the winter.....it's fun and good therapy. Winter depresses me:scowl:.

The shipping was $13.07 for the bass kit and a MM style PU.
Shipping was fast and complete. I've had a couple of orders with them so far and I'm satisfied with their service. Also, they respond to emails fairly quick. http://www.guitarfetish.com/

This is going to be my third fretless.

Thanks for the compliment.
