Winter Build Jazz Project

I actually had the fortune of seeing this post right before my wife asked me what I wanted for Xmas so right now I've got a P-bass kit sitting under the tree. This will give me something to do while I amass the rest of the tools I need to start my Telecaster build.

I did have a question, however. I really like the way your stain looks and I'm thinking of doing something similar. Do you mind me asking what type of stain you used? I haven't stained anything since shop class nearly 20 years ago.

The stain color is cherry...I think McMasters is the brand name, but prob any cherry stain would do it.

the bass looks great! this thread is really giving me the itch to try one of these projects...

one question-- do you anticipate any neck dive issues with the body being so light? that doesn't seem to bother some people, but it kinda bugs me.

It is a slight worry for me, but, I'm going to add extra hardware. An extra metal knob and pot, the bottom jack plate, a MM style PU, dunlop straplocks, copper sheilding, and I always use a wide leather strap(Warwick is heavy)

I'll put a chunk of lead in the control panel if I have to(prob won't need it)
I need to get off of the couch and put some hardware on it.:rollno:

Did you do any grain filling on this body? Or did you just go with stain?

I had hoped to put on a grain filler, but I decided to skip that step.

I put approx 20 (maybe more)of polyurathane with 0000 steelwool sanding between coats, 90% of the grain was filled, I finally quit putting on coats because the wood is so soft it WILL get bumps and dings eventually.

OK, over the holiday weekend I....

Mounted the neck to the body
carefully mounted the bridge
copper lined the control cavity and bottom of PU routes
took off bridge and drilled for the ground wire to control cavity
mounted the MM style neck PU and the J bridge PU
mounted strap locks
installed a set of old strings, installed the string retainer
did a quickie set up(shim under neck, took shim out:hmm:)
quickie adjusted bridge. checked truss rod..snugged it
Tuned up and watched neck settle in.....
It did not play at first.....but got better with tension/time
started to work on the control panel.

Great finish and you are inspiring me to get around to mine!
I did read most of what you said you finished it with-
What kind of poly for the 20 coats and how did you apply it?
I went to my favorite local paint supply and asked for their best and hardest poly in a spray can. Lots of light coats with a light buffing out between coats. I did not put as much on the neck back...I kinda liked it on the lite side.

Thanks for looking. Happy New Year!

I hope the neck settles in quickly for you.

The neck is settling in better....almost time to start lowering bridge saddles! and a better set-up......I really need to work on the control panel this weeking:hmm:

Thank you for your interest....I havin' fun doing this project. Happy New Year!
