Winter Build Off 2018- The sketchy nebulous bass.

I did a terrace route on my last neck through, it worked great, but it was a bit stressful. I usually use the Shinto in combination with card scrapers, 80 grit sandpaper and a sanding cylinder in the dremel.

I feel like the final shape of the transition is unknown until I'm done, so I don't like taking too much off too fast.

More than likely. I’ll glue in a little shelf. They’ll be a tight fit anyway so I don’t need much.

Couple of coats of sanding sealer (De waxed shellac).
Apply Tru Oil with cloth patch. Careful not to use much so it doesn’t run. Wait for it to dry and repeat. After the first few coats, I rub it down with 0000 steel wool to level it and remove all the floating pet hair that it’s apprently a big magnet for. I then do that every other coat or so. After about ten coats it starts to look ok. I apply a final coat then wait for it to cure. About ten days. You use the ‘sniff’ test. If you can still smell the raw Tru Oil then it’s not ready. Then wet sand and buff.
I’ve found you can not use sandpaper for this. It will go right through the finish in a heartbeat, especially on edges. I use the micro mesh pads from Stewmac starting at 1500 and working through them to 12000. Then it’s the usual polishing compound and swirl remover gig.

I’ve wetsanded Danish oil in and had it work pretty well but it was on Alder, so not a lot of grain to fill in the first place.

That's what it is suppose to do. You let it sit for a while, then you hand rub it off. The wood will sweat, and you hand rub that, after repeating that process, you get a glorious finish

Just so you don’t think I’m slacking between Tru Oil coats, I’m making a cool burl top guitar with a two point trem and Brian May signature pickups.
