Winter Build Off 2020 - Leftovers and Locust

I love the floating controls in your drawing!
Are you going solid color?

I'm definitely noodling ideas for the controls. In the drawing, I'd imagined coming up with all sorts of support tubes through the body... but that would have required some fairly intensive routing and support in a chambered-type body build.
However, I am rethinking a lot of that. More as it develops.

What I'm hoping to attain for the "vibe" of all the cutaways is something akin to this:

I never heard of Koji Tanaka until I looked up "wood sculptures" and I love the look of that sort of carved - bevel - swoop kind of vibe. So I need to figure out how to make that happen, then see if it works with this wood.

As for the finish, the initial idea was to carve it all, enhance the grain as much as possible, then do a slightly darker stain all over.

But I'm also thinking about a few other options:
- Dark coloration on the outer parts, more natural on the inside carved areas
- Shou Sugi Ban burned finish
- "Sandblasted" style grain with a dark color
- Ceruse finish
- Possible mixes of those.

The scrap pieces I cut off will be experimented on soon and I'll see if these ideas make some sense. I'd actually kind of forgotten about doing Shou Sugi Ban until you asked about the finish. It's something I've been meaning to try and it allows for plenty of variations. If the experiments on the scraps look decent with it, that's where I'm leaning.

Cut the neck pocket:

When you cut this stuff, it sends off an interesting dust:

Cleaned up the corners of the pocket and fine sanded the neck and...

It's a great fit! This is with no screws:

Then I plotted the screw holes:

Screwed the neck on, mocked it up:

Up next - figure out how to "chamber" it, figure out how to build a rig to contour the top and back (though @MPU kinda gave me a hint with his posts ), then start carving it up. I'm excited to get back to this!

As long as this "glorified rocking horse" took me to make, there's only 2 things that come to mind:
1) It better work!
2) I better find more than just this build to use it.

It may be overkill, but there shouldn't be an issue with doing bodies or fingerboards with this beast.
(as long as the radius needs to be 69", amirite @rogerbmiller?)

You are right. Necks should barely have any radius but if it is going to have a radius it should be 69". Epic.

Not gonna leave 2019 without making a lot of sawdust.

That... wasn't too bad, actually! More exercise than I anticipated. But it all went according to plan.
Now that I have a body blank, it's time to figure out how and where to put air through it. I've been sketching, but nothing has jumped out fully, so I intend to reset my brain tonight (margaritas!), shake off the hangover tomorrow, and hit the ground running on Thursday.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, TB!!!

Started getting a little more in depth with the carving.

I'm finding that most of the "advantage" that the power carving tools gave me were also causing some major need for sanding in very hard to reach places. In other words, my hands are killing me!
But it's looking pretty sweet.

Once I get the tuner cove cut out and control area situated, I can sand the whole thing and look towards finish. Not quite sure how I want to play that. Was leaning towards the shou sugi ban, but felt that the subtlety in the carve shapes may be lost with a darker finish.
Then there's the idea of doing the burn on the outside and the more natural look on the inside... but that has drawbacks with the 3-D nature of the contours.

I think I need to find some scraps and light them on fire and see what happens.
