All great ideas, but want to keep the finish relatively simple. It’s hard enough for me to make a 2-D shape finish look nice... trying to clear and buff this shape?!? No way!!

After some cogitation, I managed to pick out what the final color should be. But first, it was time to accent the grain a bit. I used a steel brush and knocked the soft grain in a bit, then covered it in black wood filler mixed with water and let it dry.

Then I hit it with 220 on the sander.

The grain fill didn't hit the insides too well, so I decided to scorch those a bit with a blowtorch. Just a little one, meant for creme brulee.

The color of choice: SEDONA RED. And wow, was I happy with how this looked.

I'm gonna do another coat to make sure, then likely clear it after it's cured. But it's all I can do not to just want to put this together RIGHT NOW!
Of course, I need the neck done for that, so I did end up radiusing the board.

I'm going to have to cut the nut, plot the holes in the headstock, make the string holder mechanism, shape the headstock, then start finishing the neck. All fun stuff!

It's going to have texture from the grain, as I'll likely just do a thin finish. But the stain basically soaks into the wood and you wipe off excess. Very easy to work with.

HA! That would have been cool, but this is gonna have a very small head paddle. Basically, it's just going to be enough to hold the strings and be able to hang it on the wall.
And seriously man, GOOD CALL on the color. I'm giving you 100% credit on that, thank you so much for the "Red Rocks" cue. That is exactly what this needed.

I ‘ve been following this build and have purposely avoided clicking too soon in hopes of seeing more evolution of progress or even final results. Satisfaction was temporary-I need more ! Awesome project.

Started getting a little more in depth with the carving.

I'm finding that most of the "advantage" that the power carving tools gave me were also causing some major need for sanding in very hard to reach places. In other words, my hands are killing me!
But it's looking pretty sweet.

Once I get the tuner cove cut out and control area situated, I can sand the whole thing and look towards finish. Not quite sure how I want to play that. Was leaning towards the shou sugi ban, but felt that the subtlety in the carve shapes may be lost with a darker finish.
Then there's the idea of doing the burn on the outside and the more natural look on the inside... but that has drawbacks with the 3-D nature of the contours.

I think I need to find some scraps and light them on fire and see what happens.

Not sure if you decided on a name after the holey gallahad / locust moment, but my wife said it reminded her of a hip bone, so 'Pelvis' may be on the table

@eddododo, she's definitely onto something there.

There are so many interesting names here, though "pubic tubercle" and "iliopubic eminence" are my 2 favorites for a bass.
And FWIW, if I were building an amp, I'd definitely consider "ischial tuberosity" as a model.
