Edit: I'd recommend a clear satin poly finish to keep its original look as much as possible. I think an oil finish would darken it a lot. my two cents.

Rough cut the top….now to decide…..Do I glue the top on, route the pickup cavity and drill to the control cavity or do I route a Channel first…..playing with some stains in the basement…..@41Hz To Go you are right. If I stain it….it needs to be really light!
Stain will ruin it and it will be made worse if you try sanding it back.

I would route pup pockets after the lamination in case you don't get it lined up perfectly in the glue up.
Might look cool if you clear poly the top, then tape the top off and stain the rest of the body?
Or dye to body prior to top lamination and put a coat of shellac to lock the color in?

Personally, I wouldn't stain it at all. I assume that @41Hz To Go was talking about an oil finish (for example tru oil or danish oil) in this post, not about stain. Oil finishes can darken the wood a little bit, but do not contain pigment like stain. I think the dark top creates a very nice contrast to the light ash body as it is.
Playing with some scraps and tru oil I used on the neck. Going to have to sand a scrap of the body wood and see how it turns out. The top looks great with tru oil. Thanks for your input!!
Route a channel across the cavity locations to connect them, then glue the top on, then route the cavities. This is much simpler and less risky than drilling from cavity to cavity.
Sooooo…..had a senior high retreat to go to this weekend but worked from home on Friday. Decided I would take a couple breaks throughout the day on Friday and see what I could do to move this forward on the bass….that was mistake #1. Pulled th body out of the BIG clamps ;-) and removed material from the neck pocket. All was well…..realized I didn’t have a proper patter bit to route the neck pocket…..only one without a ball bearing…..it’ll be ok…..I’ll be careful……How awesome will it be to post that BSO pic before I leave?!?!……long story shorter router wandered bit chewed into the neck pocket template without me noticing…..and now I have this:
which kills me because I got excited and Rushed where I should have pumped the brakes! Now I need to make a couple pieces that I can glue in to patch and clean up the pocket…..lesson learned….(I hope). The good news is it is starting to really come together!!!

Liked not because I like that it happened but I feel for you having been in similar situations.
The top is so heavily distressed you could probably graft in a bit of scrap and never know the difference!
