Thinking it through, I now have an idea why my forstner bit got so hot: I have to use low drill speed.Great, had me going there
Check the outside surface where the cutting edge is for gunk. As it builds up, it makes it harder and harder for the cutting edge to make contact and the burning gets worse.
Plus there are definitely differences in quality between bits and manufacturers. 
I have a bit that smokes too and it isn't speed related, it just sucks. 
I'd measure the shaft on the pots and then figure out how deep to rout the cavity so they fit nicely and you can get both a washer and a nut on the top.

You can also use a small chisel. Take a 1/8" chisel work slowly around the circle, and then you can go down any depth you please. Clean up with some sandpaper or a dremel and Bob's your uncle.
In order to acquaint myself with veneer, I ordered a Veneer Starter Pack. What this means is that, since they sell veneer in large quantities, they can easily put together generous packs of leftovers where each pack has considerable variety. My pack (€15) contains about two dozen of sheets, all amply large enough for a headstock or two.

I've had to remove myself from any facebook group that Derek Kimball is a member of on account of how tempting his wood photos are!
I decided that I need a giant climate controlled warehouse and approximately One billion dollars to stock it with wood.
None of my ideas have worked so far.
