Winter Build Off 2022 - Get Ready

Just to be clear, my suggestion about adding a non-bass category was intended much more in the vein of inclusion and participation and wasn't intended at all to make this more complicated or exclude anyone's ideas or participation. I hope everyone participates or at least starts build threads, as I agree completely that the benefit is much more about the spirit of community and shared experiences than it is about "bass" or anything specific.

Hey y'all... so how many besides myself and MPU were even considering the idea of entering a non-bass instrument?
I'm not about trying to rock the boat... like...not even.
I just kinda wanted to play... and a guitar is what will be on my bench during that time frame.
My rational of it fitting the theme? Was probably kind of a stretch.
The last WBO I entered was the "Challenge Yourself" theme in 2017. And I didn't finish in time. (Arachnophelia):(
But honestly... it's not a big deal that I be allowed to participate with a non bass.
Please... don't make complicated & unpopular exceptions on my account.

Truth be told?.. I don't even really want to build the silly little thing. It's gonna be weird.
But I have to.

I don't really think anyone is being a PITA (besides me) or making things complicated, or unfair, or whatever.
I just had a deep thoughts moment this morning.
Beej started a build off and I was like, "yeah cool!"
Then a few people were like, "let's have guitars and bass variants too" and I was like, "yeah cool!" Then dwiz said let's have different categories and I was like, " yeah cool!"
Then we started talking about how we would categorize and judge and I heard the record scratch.
I'm thinking it's not complicated yet, but looks like it could get that way if we get all hung up on how to compartmentalize it. And at the end of the day, Beej has to work it all out and make the call.
I don't want guitars excluded. Period.
Originally I thought categories was a great idea, but I have no idea how to do that and have it not be complicated.
So, for the sake of simplicity, I think the options are:
Bass only
Bass + everything else in a separate category
Or, everyone just enter and join the build off with no categories and let the voters at the end pick what build they like best. If someone doesn't think a guitar should win, they won't vote for it. Simple. And we all get to hang out and build $#!t.

so my vote is bass only which includes anything with EADG in the bass register. That would be 4, 5, 6 string and beyond. Bass ukes, piccolo( they can be restrung with regular bass strings and be a bass. Micro, short, regular or long scale again as long as it is a bass. Adding guitars and their variants would just clutter things up. I build guitars myself but keep them elsewhere as I am here for the bass.

Two words "Talk Bass"

Agreed! I'm not sure if I'll be able to enter or not, but i do think it should be about the bass. It is talkbass...

Adding guitars and their variants would just clutter things up.
I definitely see this point.
And yes... it is Talk Bass.
An event such as a build off... should support the main theme of the venue where it's held.

Besides, at the rate I'm moving on my current build...There's a chance I might not even be ready in time.
THEN won't I feel stupid for pushing the liberal agenda.?? o_O

So... for those reasons...

Much love...
(Watch for my guitar thread next year) :D

Well, this is TalkBass, but the forum is Luthier's Corner. By that definition any stringed instrument (that's not a percussion instrument :D) should be allowed. If it's a luthier showcase then I think anything goes. If it's a bass guitar building showcase then the string diameter restriction makes sense.

I guess this is where I keep coming back to a simple idea. Just ask an admin what they think. If the LC is for all stringed instruments and they don't see why a build-off wouldn't also be all stringed instruments, then problem solved. Right?
But, if an admin says "It's TalkBass, sooo...." then you have your answer. And at that point you ask them to clarify what classifies as a "bass".

So, another build-off. You know, the last time I entered one of these, I was diagnosed with cancer. But since I'm feeling much better these days, I may actually enter this one. I've been thinking about a short scale 30" Ric clone. I have a couple of tops I've been saving for a few years now, and I think it's time I used them. Well, we'll see.

Letting the mods decide what is and isn't a bass, and by extension decide about buildoff rules, is going too far. That's not a mod's job. We have to reach some consensus here, among us.
