How about "project swap", you create a design concept, then another builder builds it. So I draw up a p bass, and Groggy builds it in his interpretation like a Dano with a gold foil pickup. (OK, unlikely to be popular, requires an even number of builders, and probably won't happen... but I think it's cool 
)

Yeah I could get on board with this, I think it would encourage maximum participation as you could pretty much fit anything into the brief. (Plus I need to make a stingray!)
And just to confound things, I've also bandied about the idea of making every Summer Build Off a 'free for all' type theme. I can't remember who first said that, but I do like the "Lazy Days of Summer" aspect, while also realizing that for a small percentage of the world's population it would be the Lazy Days of Winter.

That may be a good idea to make the SBO a free for all every year. It may encourage additional participation with no real restrictions.

I like the free-for-all idea, as long as it's rigidly constrained.... 
I've even made notes to just have everyone compete against everyone else in the voting, so in other words, no categories. Really make it free-reign! I dunno, can't please everyone though.

I had only 220(cad) into my entire jazzrunner project. I'm cheap.I do like building to a target, and I like to reduce, reuse, recycle and repurpose, buuuut... I often put upwards of $1000 into parts and electronics, so the $100 is a bit tricky for me too.
My han solo bass came in at around £150. I'm also cheap
I just built this bass in fenders custom shop as a test , it has low noise pickups but still no series /parallel and no built in led fuzz effects. Cost 2100usd =2830.00 canadian. This is why I build.
Loved that carbonite!! I got to work a tv series last year with mark hamill, crew loved him -great guy.I'm a huge SW fan btw.
But that bass is very expensive in meticulous labour.
I now have to build TWO basses? I'll need six months then.
Just build one body.

Since the Nerd build went so well maybe a branching out that may pull more of us out into the open.
A Sci-Fi build, or Cyberpunk, or Steampunk or some other aesthetic that could lead to more interesting choices and stories.
