While the new shellac is mixing, I knocked out the first coats on the front using what was in the bottle from october. Not sure if i will bother with more coats on the front.
With shellac, it dries fast enough in first coats to almost constantly apply to one side of the bass for at least a half hour (go from left to right of the front/back and then go around the perimeter - the left side is often ready for the next coat when done with perimeter). I don't count any coats, just apply when it feels dry to the back of my hand and stop when i am satisfied.
Here is the fancy applicator pad (t-shirt material wrapped around 2 cotton balls)
We can see on this side the difference between finished front and raw back
Good sheen in the sunlight
I sanded the body to 1000 grit before finishing, normally will get a great result and only use white scotch brite pads to level the shellac after final coat. There is no escaping sanding, but sanding super fine before finish means i spend ~1.5 hours total once i start applying shellac
