it’s amazing what some people can accomplish in three short months. Congratulations to all who finished - this is perhaps the largest group I’ve seen in recent years! Some gorgeous entries indeed.

Assembly builds are the gateway into scratch builds.

That is what moved me into scratch builds.

What got me started on building and repair, way, waaay back, was scratching for band (ok, food) money. We had friends at the music stores and they'd put aside any "totaled" budget instruments smashed up during shipping for us. Usually it was a box of kindling, but we eventually ended up with enough arms/legs/necks/bodies to get a few Frankenstein acoustic guitars glued back into playable shape. "FOR SALE - CHEAP!"

Don't think this is even an option today, though.
We'd have just starved saving up enough for beat to death practice PA, instead of feasting on ramen and schmidt sport packs.

You misunderstood. Both the parking and the coffee are $10 but you get a $1 discount for every instrument you've started building.

My "Island of Misfit Toys" is quite large... Experiments don't always work out.

I also like the idea of a case category.
I do need to build a bunch of cases.

The whole point of these buildoffs (from my perspective at least) is to share knowledge and get people interested in building.

It's the actual building and talking about building that's fun. Seeing how other people solve a problem, seeing how other people approach design, things like that. The process is amazing, enjoyable, educational, and fun.

I'm not sure I'm going to get through all of the threads before lockout, but I think I've read enough to have gotten some ideas for approaching my own, and to know what I like best in them, at least enough to vote, and I'm sure I'll find more ideas as I read through them in detail.

The reason for the quotes from dwizum is that once I mentioned a Sklar P homage* I started to think about what I've really liked in other 4s, and what I haven't. Building a clone doesn't interest me any more than cloning, say, a Lambo, rather, here's what you want it to do, how would you (me) do it? I think I have that down mentally and now have to use my existing skills to make that into something physical. I need challenges or my brain stagnates, so this could be fun, and building my own neck is going to be part of that too for that reason (I'll use an LMII slotted fretboard though). Sorry for the stream of consciousness ramble, but it's been rattling in my head as I've worked today, often because someone I've seen has done something in their builds that would not have occurred to me.

* Simple BO4 with the same pickup placement and type mainly.
