That’s definitely where I tend to come from. I like to build things that don’t exist, but oh so obviously should. :cool:

Definitely going to use EMGs as I like them anyway. I've been looking at pics for the spacing Lee had on his and think I have it down thanks to someone making a comparison pic.
The big decision then, is do I buy them in the traditional split housing, or in a 35P4 so that I can buy other types and swap them in for variety later? According to the EMG site, they're made the correct way: "The EMG 35P4 is our P bass pickup in an Extended range housing with the treble magnet closer to the neck (like a Spector or Yamaha bass)".

I've given up on fast cars and would rather just have a useful lounge chair of a car. However, long before BMW started using parallelogram double A arm front suspensions on bikes, I've wanted to do this. Many years ago I set up race cars and forks make no mechanical sense to me when there's a better way. I have a friend with a CNC and he's seen my napkin sketches and reckons it's easy as to make the parts, so this might end up being the project. I have an older litre bike that is perfect as a base, so this is more likely as I get the performance for much less money. There are a lot of unpatrolled hilly roads not too far away where I could play on it.

Absolutely. I'm sure a direct clone would be great, but where's the fun in that? That last sentence of yours is so spot on with how I like to do things.

I spent many hours yesterday reading the build threads for this year's WBOs and looking at the basses and guitars I've owned, none have been what I would have owned if what I really wanted were available off the shelf, and I know what I'm like when I start getting into things, I'll learn everything about it and practice until I get good at it until I'm very good.

Trust me, I get that reading the threads and watching many builds on YT. But, worst case is I end up with a few customs for myself and a bunch of new tools I can use to build things other than basses, I don't see the downside.

Did some number crunching on costs, and parts wise, DIYing a custom can make a relatively inexpensive bass considering what I could buy off the shelf for the same wallet hit. Time and tools I don't factor in as the first is part of a hobby and the second, well, they're tools and if you still have your man-card, that should require no further explanation.

I can see that will be the case. In the last 48hrs or so since I considered this, I have maybe 10 build ideas, almost all of which are waaaay beyond my current skills. But challenges are fun.

I've given up alcohol and sugar, and am in the transition back to my low carb lifestyle, so building instruments shouldn't be hard.

Famous last words.

I said similar things about a year ago. The last bass I bought over a decade ago, sat in a case in the basement for about 6 yrs. I wanted to do something with it and maybe start noodling again. So I joined TB, said "hold my beer, this shouldn't be too bad" and a year later, I have a rebuilt 5 string, a close to finished 4 string dog bowl guitar, a close to finished 4 string bass made of wenge and an appointment to see a new therapist.
