I've used them personally and helped others use them (as their sound engineer). In the latter role, I much preferred over-ear mics to lavelier (e.g. in church environment) since natural head-turning is a perfect example of proximity drastically affecting volume. Hate laveliers.
Regarding the dynamics, I agree that handheld or standing mics offer more dynamic control. I only do backup vocals, and the proximity issue has me wondering if I should put a volume foot-pedal into the mix. Not sure how else I can balance myself live (no one live engineering us for most gigs).
Anyone used a volume pedal with an headset/over-ear mic to help address the proximity/dynamic issue?
IMHO, lavaliers or horrible for sound reinforcement purposes and their use should be confined to news rooms and similar settings.
