Wisdom on Prince from Gene Simmons

I never said it was not a big deal. I just said it was most likely an accident, and after an accident, all you can do is apologize and pay up. You keep on about it like Prince killed someone or assaulted a woman.

If it were an accident, that would be altogether different. You're the only one I've heard remotely suggest it was an accident. Again, why would the guitarist call it "bad behavior" if he thought it was an accident.

No, I don't put it remotely on the same level as murder or rape. But I do believe decent people should respect others' property.

I think the situation being an accident seems much more likely than an act of deliberate destruction. There are number of videos where Prince plays a solo and then tosses the guitar. The most famous being the Rock 'n Roll HOF where he threw the guitar up in the air and it never came down.

It really seems like you hate Prince, and this incident gives you a reason to say bad things about him. Prince compensated Kirk, plus the man is dead. I am giving this debate a rest.

Now there are two.

Anyone familiar with Prince will know that he regularly tosses guitars to someone. That ain't new;). This is far from the first time that he did it. Anyone who has been on stage will also understand how you may have difficulty seeing under bright stage lights. For no reason that I can prove I seriously doubt that Prince just decided to break Kirk's guitar for the hell of it. Yet...

OTOH some apparently need to believe that. Why is still my question. Why do people believe that it couldn't have been an accident?

Evil Prince: "Kirk wants an autograph? I'll give him an autograph !!!"

Blewy. Smashed to pieces. Misiion accomplished.
:D

I wouldn't have minded if he trashed one of my guitars, as it has been said; You would have a story about Prince. BUT I never would have handed him my number one.

That is an outright lie. I already told you I had nothing against the guy--I enjoy what I know of his music, respect him as a musician, had been neutral about him as a person--but I just don't agree with you that it was no big deal. And I wouldn't care who did it, I would feel the exact same way.

Okay, you guys are fanboys sticking by your guy. I understand. But what you are saying just doesn't make sense to me. In a long concert where he needs to switch guitars, I could see how he might throw a guitar to a roadie. But I don't see it in a quick performance on a talk show, and I don't see it with somebody else's prized axe--and an axe beautiful enough to catch Prince's eye says something.

So I guess you believe this article is entirely fictitious? In Dick Move, Prince Smashes Other Guy’s Guitar on ‘Fallon’ | SPIN

How would you rewrite it?

You gave your opinion, I gave mine. That does not make me a liar.

I see nothing that indicates it could not have been an accident. The article does not clearly state how it was smashed. It may well have been that the roadie missed the toss.

The other thing you seem not to consider is that the journalist may well have been biased for whatever reason. One account of an incident is not enough to come to broad conclusions about someone's character.

IF it was an illness why was he an a-hat? For having an illness?

I think that Dahmer was insane. I would think that by definition an a-hat would be someone who made the choice to do a-hat things. I doubt that Dahmer was making many conscious choices. This does not mitigate the fact that he did horrible things.

I was differentiating between having an illness and the actions that one takes to hurt others as a result of that illness. I think, though one cannot be blamed for his illness, one can be blamed for using his will to hurt others-shy of cases where there is a detachment from reality (a debatable thing in itself). Heroin addiction is not evil, but it may cause people to do evil things, for instance. Maybe there isn't any line to begin with, I don't know.

I disagree about JD and his ilk. He knew the difference between right and wrong, just as most serial killers do. They just have a strong compulsion to kill.

In other news, it seems that Gene has apologized for his comments. That's something.

The funniest thing about The Incident is how many people are apparently far more pissed, still, about it than guy who actually owned the frickin' guitar. Somebody explain that to me?
:D

I don't think anybody is genuinely angry about the incident. I think some of us though saw it for what it was when it happened, and realized that it was a clear (to me at least) statement about Prince's character.

I would NEVER, not EVER - and I'm pretty certain of that - do what he did. Neither would you, I have to guess. Nor would 99% of the people I know. Prince gets a free pass on that though. Is it because he was rich and famous? He was in an artistic moment... oh yeah. We've all had artistic moments, just like he did... and most were sensible enough to not do such bone headed, thoughtless things.

I love how people can trash one guy, call him the lowest of the low and harbor all kinds of resentment for expressing his opinion about something - and make a saint out of someone who, well, IMO, doesn't deserve that sainthood. While piling it on others who have a different opinion of the guy than you.

And yes, some of you here are making the guy out to be a saint.

Gene Simmons = bad boy, bad BAD boy. Prince = good boy. We're all just a bunch 'o frikken idiots :). My opinion.

The internet is fun.

I never liked Kiss or am a fan of Gene simmons but I agree with him, Prince made bad choices with his life ,people who do drugs think it can,t happen to them some think they are invincible ,I know what I,m doing, nothing can happen to me, I knew alot of people personally my brother did the same thing .What,s the most troubling thing about it is when you have great sucesss and foolishly take risks with your live,s ,drugs are a stupid waste of time ,to all who think I only smoke some weed, it slows you down and makes some people dopey I know alot of them read the studies about it.

People who smoke weed regularly never learn to properly deal with their emotions. They'll all tell you (because they completely believe) it has no negative effect on them, helps them concentrate, etc., but time tells a different story. I know lots of long time pot smokers and pretty much all of them have relationships and lives I don't envy. They're content to come home from their jobs, get high and smile through their evenings. Just another form of medicating, and putting a stop to experiencing the myriad of feelings and emotions we have the opportunity to feel. I like being connected. I love being clear headed. I like being present in this reality, not an altered one. And I'm happy to experience ALL my emotions. Even the ones that are uncomfortable. I believe they contribute greatly to my growth, and my creativity.

And I'm not saying anyone has to agree.

If anyone cares to look up the thread from a few years ago, you will see I was very critical of how he treated Kirk's guitar. No, I would not have done what he did, and I do think having money to pay for things, allowed Prince to do some jerk things. That said, I don't think he meant to break Kirk's guitar.

As for Simmons, I already said that I think some of his remarks are clearly designed to keep his name in the news and relevant.

He asked to buy the guitar from Kirk, and Kirk said he wouldn't sell it. The guitar was special to him. Money does not fix this one.

Prince trying to buy the guitar is something I had not heard before. What is your source?

It is also interesting how Simmons fans have managed to shift the thread from Simmons, to a three year old incident that has been settled for better or worse.

Here ya go Kirk Douglas: The Epiphone Interview

Kirk's words, " ...he can certainly use it but he most definitely cannot buy it".

Working and can't search for it right now. It's Kirks account of it, one of the first that pops up when googled.

I take your word for it. I guess your point is Prince could be a dick. I think we already knew that. I can be a dick too, for what that is worth.

What does any of this have to do with Simmons tasteless comments, for which he apologized. I also do not get conflating casual, recreational drug use with drug dependency resulting from pain management.

I just said that incident tainted my opinions of Prince. Others here started jumping all over it. Only answering questions now...

Not worth me getting into your second question there. In a few words - Medication isn't the only option for pain management. And not everyone using pain medication gets addicted to it, or abuses it.

Also, I edited my last post and put the link.

The bottom line is we all have shortcomings, but we all do not have the same shortcomings.

Fanboy? Lol. Guess you had to go there too.
:D

Sorry, I'm calling it like I see it. In your fictional world he would only toss a guitar on a long show. Like the RRHOF performance IIRC.

I'm not a big fan, as I've mentioned, yet I've seen him toss a guitar frequently.

What in that article says he did it intentionally trying to toss it on the floor? Talk about fiction... this hater thing is comical. A complete refusal to consider another possibility than what you need to believe.
:)
