hey thunder ritter what woods are used in your famous wishbass fantasy

#827 was curly maple body (two piece wings) with a walnut/purpleheart/maple neck and Ipe 'board

#1186 has a rosewood body (two piece wings) with a rosewood/purpleheart/mahogany neck and rosewood 'board

My latest 'B Fantasy' (as I'm calling it) has a striped bubinga body, with purpleheart/maple/purpleheart neck and a purpleheart board.

BTW I've got all the woods of all my Wishbass refins on my web site under 'Refinishing'.

the one listed in the best looking bass on tb

I think I may have said those exact words awhile back. Lol.

TR's #827 inspired me to end up with this, #1107.

HB, is it my imagination, or did you mod the projection with the controls (lower treble side bout) to fit that coffin case?

no i got pretty lucky! my bass just happened to fit that case once i removed the "secret compartment" thing.

I agree. Still there are improvement to be accomplished.
If you decide to sell one day please contact me!

I'm certainly looking to make many more improvements! :) might even just redo the whole finish someday for the heck of it.

So i have a question. This is an old question. I've read through A LOT of this forum in the past almost two years, aside from some of the more recent stuff. What has everyone been doing about cases for their wishbasses?

I posted this photo of my home-built case before, but here it is again. It is a basically a soft keyboard gig bag I picked up at GC. They come in several sizes and are quite cheap and VERY nice!. One of the sizes is perfect for huge Wishbasses. Since the case is soft I decided to stiffen it up with a large piece of styrofoam cut to fit the case. A piece of that foam can be seen in the photo cut to be a block to support the bass in the case when held by the handle. The foam is not yet covered with fuzzy cloth in the photo, but it's done now.

On top of the hard foam is another piece of soft poly urethane foam and a large piece of artificial fur cloth covers the whole thing. There is cutout for the tuning keys and there are two styrofoam blocks one a "U" shape to hold the neck (came out of an SX shipping box) and the other one that holds up the bass when the case is held by the handle. These two blocks go through holes in the soft foam down to the hard styro where they are glued in by spray glue. Spray glue also holds the fuzzy cloth over the foams and onto the supporting blocks. I considered adding a velcro strap to hold the neck in the block but haven't really seemed to need it yet.

Hard to see are flaps of fuzzy cloth that flip up over the headstock (is flipped out over the zipper) and the lower corner of the bass. The reason for this which may just be paranoia, but since the Wishbass is large there is a tendency for the headstock and lower corner to rub against the zipper when carrying the case or opening or closing the lid. I never saw damage, but since I was always pulling the zipper over the bass corners to close the lid (It's not really a tight fit) I just got worried about scratches and installed the flaps. You probably wouldn't need them with a Wish more compact than the Kewel.

My second Wishbass came with a coffin case so I can compare to that. The coffin case is hard and strong hence very protective, but it is MUCH heavier than the keyboard thing. With the Wish inside it really has some weight. Cost wise the Keyboard seems low because of the initial cost, but by the time you get hard and soft foam and fuzzy cloth and spray glue etc. it runs into some money too. (got the supplies at Jo Ann fabrics), but because of the light weight I do think I prefer the keyboard thing over the coffin. The keyboard case when done feels very much like the semi-hard gig bag that came with my Conklin. It's nice and light too.

Note that the fuzzy fur at one Jo Ann store was NOT the same as that at another store, so I had to go back to the original store to get more when I came up a tad short. Hint I picked up at Jo Ann: use an electric turkey carving knife to cut the foam! Works like a CHAMP!

Great! What kind of glue did you use to attach the fuzzy fur to the "foam" and other surfaces?? Thank you!

(PS: Just got back in town) ...

The glue I use is Scotch "Spra-mount" (I think it has funny spelling like that, but can't say for sure since my last can was the Borden's version of the same stuff). It's basically the glue on "magic mending tape" in a spray can (or at least smells like it). I love it because it sticks to lots of things (I always use it to spray bare copper foil on one side to stick it into bass cavities when doing a shield job) but like the tape, isn't super permanent and can be pulled off in the event of an error. I got mine at Hobby Lobby, but any art supply store has it.

i cant decide which wishbass body i like the best first i liked the peanut and hipper
now i like the arrow, lobe, and stude

Well, beyond Rip's suggestion, maybe you should focus on the ergonomics of each body style. Since I assume you do not have access to what each model would feel like to play, (both sitting and standing) those of us who do could give our opinions. Perhaps once you get enough feedback on that aspect of owning one of these basses, a certain body style would emerge as the best for you. For example, the Stude sits very differently on your leg than does the Hipper or Lobe - that kind of thing ...
