WR; Thanks for the heads-up! Anyone fancy a Scarab? It sure is a buyer's market right now, wow ...

Update: I've been busy re-arranging my shop to set up the spray tent more permenantly on the other side of the power tool storage cabinet in the middle of the room. It actually took a lot longer than you might think since space is limited - once you move one thing, the ripple effect is huge. I think the Mando bass is ready for finish, but I have to order more Tru-Oil aerosol from Birchwood-Casey. Anyway - boring! (Slow news day.)

Seen in this photo (right to left) and shot from the doorway of the utility room is J-K Lobe #1180, Stude #1291, Mando Bass in front of the Chesire, and Scarab #1127 (on the bench) ...

#1180 and #1127 are ready for buff-out/wax, then copper shielding tape and soldering back together with the new pups and vol/vol/tone set-ups. I'll start with the Scarab I suppose, once I touch-up the cavity cover which ended up needing an additional sand-back and now some Tru-Oil (ugh).

What's this have to do with anything? Well, nothing!

So lately, I've been playing my fretted WB's a lot. I have four now, and while I love my fretless, I realize that I'm more comfortable with fretted. I do love me some Wishbass, but the 6 or 7 fretless I have are more than enough to cover my needs. So I started plotting to remove the fingerboard of the Cherrywood hipper, and replace it with a slotted board I got of ebay, and have my local luthier put some frets on it.

Recently, Wish has been selling some really cool looking Aromatic Cedar basses on the bay. I came sooooo close to buying the fretless scarab that just sold a couple of days ago. I love that wood, I just don't want another fretless. But Wish isn't making fretted anymore........ or is he.

Reading this thread recently, 49sfine casually mentions LMI, as if everyone should know what he's talking about. Never heard of this company, but the context of the post made it clear that they supplied fingerboards. LMI, Luthier Mercantile International, was about the 6th link presented by google. What a fantastic place. All kinds of options for wood, and most of them they will radius and slot to your liking.

"So Steve", I says, "you got any more of that aromatic cedar for a custom?" "why sure I do" says Steve.

I have placed a deposit on a custom, four string, 34" scale, Wishenbacker body style of Cedar, with NO fingerboard, no routing, no electronics, and no string through holes. I will be ordering a 12" radius, slotted fingerboard from LMI.

The Alembic P pickup with preamp and filter, that I scored used, minus the output jack and battery clip, was sent back to Alembic. At first I was just gonna have them check out the pup, and install a jack and battery clip. But by the time I was done, they are sending back a P and J pickup, with vol, pan, filter, and Bass/treble, what they refer to as an East/West electronics package. I just happen to have a Badass bridge that I took off of Scroll #4.

This will be my next project. I'm gonna move slowly and make this one really special. I'm as giddy as a little schoolgirl.

Obviously, there are no pix yet, cause there is no bass, but there will be..................... stay tuned.

JBY

The last two Wishbass I picked up were both cxd custom orders and both were fretted. I suspect that if you ask nicely the fretted Wishbass is still an option, although sounds like you've got yourself a fun project!

The LMI slotted boards are great. I've used the rosewood ones for my new build basses. I've personally found even the lower grade boards to be really good and in particular I like the striping you get with those ones!

JBY: Sorry about the LMI comment - guess I did assume that StewMac and LMI were pretty much known to guys on this thread. Glad you tracked them down. Your project sounds really fun and I really like the fact you are going to be installing the FB (especially) yourself. By doing so, and all the other things Steve is NOT doing, you can create a very unique Wishbass. I think this may be the best new way to order something from him because it eliminates a lot of the areas that might not receive enough detail, it's quicker for Steve, and cheaper for us! I may have to get in on this at some point (not for a while though).

Also, what does the "Wishenbacker " body stye look like? Can't wait for more updates on this one!

TR: It strikes me that if you order an unslotted, flat, 2nd grade board from LMI, you can hardly beat those prices. I think they would average about $13 each, plus a little shipping. I am really wanting to build a bass or two in the 32" scale length - an LMI board would be perfect, and inexpensive. I already have the radius sanding blocks, all I need now is a good fret saw and the mitre box. Hmmmmmm ..............

Sorry?? I'm grateful, you turned me on to an awesome resource. If you find Wishenbacker on that body styles document that made the rounds, you'll see something that looks kinda like a Rickenbacker.

Pretty much what you'd expect!

I got them radiussed ($7 for 3+) and slotted ($7 for 3+) - cheap versus the time and effort to do it!

I run the site, so PM me and we'll figure it out. Anyone else having these issues?
Just tried it with my Mac and no issues here.

This may be a bit off topic, but wanted to post for guidance...

I moved to NC in '05 and just happened across Steve's work. I ended up picking up a bass in, I think, '08, and have enjoyed it - off and on - since then. I am not really a fretless player, so it doesn't get as much attention as its fretted cousins.

Would love to find someone who could "finish" the instrument for me. I figured that I would use the bass as my first foray into sanding and finishing, but life has seemed to get in the way. I have seen some great work done in these forums, and thought that someone here may be able to help me out with this project.

I am really looking for someone to convert my Wish to something that resembles a mass produced instrument... that is not to say that I think that Steve's work is inferior in any way... I, being an American, am just looking for that shiny body, and a neck that has some "finish" happening.

If anyone out there might be able to help out, just PM me... This is not a bass I use too often, so happy to send it out and let you have at it, at your convenience. Or, if you are local to central NC, I could bring it to you.

Thanks
