Thank you, I agree it is a handsome instrument, and I can tell the neck is gonna feel great. The remaining question will be, how does she sound?
I love the tone of my other purpleheart top wishbass, but it is married to pear, and the Hyper is married to Mahogany. I will be putting in a Bartolini hum canceling jazz pup, which will be new territory for me. So there are a few unknowns that will make that first electric audition heavy with anticipation......... I'll let you know....

James; I heartily agree with 3Strings accessment! By the way, what is your other purpleheart Wish? I think you mentioned it in another thread, but I can't quite remember. What is the fingerboard made out of? Perhaps you could share some pix of it too, showing the pear wood - that sounds interesting ...
There is one picture of my purpleheart scarab on pg1 of WB pt2, post number 10. I will post more pix of the pear back and the neck later on. The fingerboard on the scarab is rosewood. That was a custom order that I finished and wired myself.
Well sooner than I thought, here are some more pictures. The aluminum backplate, which I made to accomodate the enlarged control cavity, is now covered with cherrywood veneer. The color of the cherrywood matches the pear quite nicely.
James; Now I remember it! What an awesome looking bass! The wood in the neck is outstanding and I always love a double shot of purpleheart for stringers. And you say it sounds good, so you are set - kool.
Just as way of an update ... I just got thru sanding the walnut Stude with 1500g and the thing is just shining. I may get a coat of Tru-Oil sealer on it tonight too - can't wait.

Well I gave in to my impatience and started the tung oil finish. Here are some shots, highlighting some of the new curves, after 3 coats of oil. I rationalize by telling myself I don't want to take all the Wish out of the bass, but in reality I am just impatient. It takes only 20% of the time to get the bass 80% "there". I try not to rush the neck, and make it as comfortable as I can, but the body just gets the bold strokes, uneven joins and rough edges, etc.
Let's hear it for a little asymmetry!
I have a jam in a couple of weeks, I don't know which basses to bring, I can't fit them all in my car!
I have to admit, that bass has alot of character and its quite nice looking aswell!
Thanks, but the character is all Wish. I'll take credit for a wee bit of the nice looking.
If I'm not mistaken it sounds like I hear the beginnings of a conversion of a former Wishbass hater?
If you read this thread, and part one of this thread, you will get a sense of the good, the bad, and the ugly, of the Wishbass cult, as it was recently labeled here. I totally understand why many people don't care for Wishbasses, I just never understood the viscous attacks on Wish. Life is too short.

I've had a wish for a few months now. Its a five string Lobe and I tried to buy flat wounds for it. I bought extra long ones, but they still didn't reach. I tried to ask wish but he wasn't too helpful. Anyone know a set of flats long enough for these things? in a 5 string set?? or a 4. If I have a deal with a round b string I will.

Don't know if those are flatwound but the bass scale is 39.55" so they may be too long. Seems like you should be able to use the B from a 35" scale set; I thought Wishbass fives were 34" scale.

Hehe, well, possibly a conversion, but right now I have too many basses at hand, so, I'm gonna wait abit.
All of my Wishes are 4 string fretless types at 34", which seems to be Wish's favorite scale length. I don't like a round wound string on a fretless, so I am in the process of trying different ones out. I have D'Addario XL Half Rounds on my Lobe, D'Addario XL Chromes on my Stude, and will put (my yet unopened) RotoSound longscale Jazz Flats on either the JB or the (still on order) Fantasy. I have had no problems with the strings being too short, in fact, I am trimming about 2" off each string when putting them on the basses. I got most of these strings online on Ebay and have been very happy with them - although I do not own a 5-string so I can't comment on that. Does this help any?well you could try DB strings
Which Lobe did you buy? There were some beauts for sale a while back - in particular a 5-string zebrawood I liked a lot. Can you describe it more? - series number? Just curious. Thanx ...
Most of the Wishes are 34" scale, but the through-body stringing rather than bridge-mount takes at least an extra inch, maybe closer to 2, factoring in the distance from the body holes to the bridge.
GHS Brite Flats fit on my Nemo.
It's also easy to get rid of any extra 'floss' with a nailfile if the strings come up a little short and the 'warning track' floss reaches the nut.

I use these on my hyper, and they fit well. D'addarios were about a half inch short, with the taper (not silk) extending over the nut.
I haven't measured it but I'm pretty sure the scale is 34" inch BUT it is a string through body and the stringers are far behind the bridge. that combined with how tall the headstock is makes for a lot of distance the strings have to travel.

Here's a couple of shots of the Stude (I haven't figured out how to do more than 2 at a time - I'll do 2 more in the next posting) ...
The first shot is of the back right after I sanded it down with 1200g. The 2nd is of the headstock after I did a lot of rounding of edges. It's even got a bit of sheen just from the fine sanding. Since taking these pix I have sanded with 1500g and put on the first coat of Tru-Oil. We're on our way!

First shot shows the misalignment of the middle veneer strip on the right lower body wing - not much I could do about. Second shot shows the fingerboard and upper right horn to good effect. The grain on this walnut is very nice and I am quite happy with how it is truning out. - I'll stop now!

Do folks ever remove a bit of material from the "throat" of the headstock so the strings can go straight from tuner to nut?
biggs1249, your lobe looks cool. You may have to remove the B and measure it to know for sure what size you will need.
49sfine, I may like the stude the most of all the body styles and yours is looking really nice. Was it you that made the long sanding block for your fingerboard? (I've read so many threads, they all seem a blur at this point...) If so, I'm interested in the details; when I have some time, I would like to refinish mine.
