With which genre or playing style are Stingrays commonly associated?

Check out tony levin playing "places to go" on his resonator album. Brilliant solo stingray and he sings too.... Insane bass playing.... Amazing tone.

Or check out Gary Grainger on John Scofield's "Pick Hits Live" album. Yes; there's some serious slapping in there, but many other sounds he pulls out of his 'Ray.

Could be. I have a very distinct recollection of the Stingray that night. Maybe he just gets it out when the mood takes him, you know, like one does at times. For whatever reason, I saw him playing one, and that's what stuck with me. I don't doubt what you say though.

I think the whole distinctive sound (which is AWESOME) and the "single" pickup (if we conveniently forget about the selector switch) lead to the impression this may be a one-trick pony. It's not. No different from a P-bass not being a one-trick pony.

I love the way my Stingray 5s (fretted and fretless) sit in any style from country to metal. That said, I have never been happy with the way a Stingray records in the studio -- it's Fender all the way. But that's another story.

I'm not sure if you mean bass in general as making a beautiful sound, but JC didn't play a Stingray on Lateralus.

46 & 2 is my favorite Tool song hands down

Between my old Stingray and my current Sterling, playing live and recording in studio, I've used them for rock, pop, blues, country, folk, and punk. They always sounded great, and still do. One day I was chatting with a dude who used a Stingray for death metal. He thought it sounded awesome in that context.

Basically, they are great for anything and everything.

Yes it's Tool. It's their original bassist, Paul D'Amour. He played with them through Undertow. He was known to play a Ric 4001 CS Sig and a Stingray.

Hey man, I've known what a Stingray was almost since I started playing guitar, 13 years ago. That was the year Lateralus came out. I loved that album, and man, Justin Chancellor. I had to figure out what was making that beautiful sound! Ever since then, whenever I hear a bass tone that made me wish I were a bassist, it was usually a Ray. Not that there weren't a few times it was a P...

I'm not saying the stingray isn't a very recognizable bass. Its actually one of the most famous and recognizable basses on the planet.

I'm just saying that if you were to tell some random person on the street that you have an Ernie Ball Stingray, they will look puzzled and ask what kind of car it is.

When I think "Stingray," I think Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel), Pino Palladino (Paul Young), Paul Denman (Sade), Bernie Edwards (Chic), and Louis Johnson. Pretty versatile if you ask me.

It's funny that Flea is still so closely associated with the 'Ray considering he hasn't used one in so long. My favorite Flea tones were on Blood Sugar Sex Magic, which were recorded with Alembic and Wal basses IIRC.

I heard a light jazz group one night - very MOR stuff, but well played - and the bassist? EBMM Stingry 5. Sounded *just* like a well played J bass to me from a distance. So EBMM's are NOT just for rocking/punking/popping.

I always think if a Chuck Mangione clip I've seen a bunch of times. Feels so Good era bassist played one, at least in videos I've seen.

I play punk and metal. my stingray kills in both bands... the classic is a little mellower sounding but still a great bass. the 3 band is my go to bass for anything I play... since I got the rays I haven't touched my fenders.
