Double Bass Wizzy M-line with......

Hi everyone. I just bought an EA Wizzy m-line from here. I currently own an iAmp800 (older model with tuner) that i use to amplify my romanian ply with RevSolo II. I should be getting the pickup today and the speaker next week. I plan on trying the iAmp out and see how that goes. But I'm prepared to dump the iAmp and get, perhaps, an AI clarus (or focus if I can swing it) for the sheer sake of size and the low cut/notch filter function, of which the iAmp lacks. But if I really like how the iAmp works, then i might get one of fdeck's HPF/PRE's so i have at least the low cut and phase switch.

My question is, what are everyone's opinions on this? Especially those who own or have owned a wizzy m-line. I've read a lot on here about great success with the wizzy cabs (10, 12, and m-line) with the AI products, but surprisingly I haven't heard much about the wizzy cabs with any of the iAmps, with maybe the exception of the micro 300.

Plus the other thing that concerns me is pushing 800 watts into a 200 watt cab. Now Larry from EA told me not to worry so that is a little reassuring. ;)

I'm running a Wizzy 112 (not m-line) with a Clarus series III. The Clarus seems to have plenty of power (in fact, a Clarus could run two Wizzies to full power if needed). The high-pass filter is indispensable and it's nice to have the option to plug in a microphone if needed. I'm sort of curious as why many folks opt for the Focus to run a Wizzy or two when the Clarus would seem to be perfectly matched for the job. More headroom?

I used to power the Wizzy with QSC PLX 1602. 1600 watts bridged into the 4-ohm Wizzy. Headroom to spare but I have to say I don't miss it. I wouldn't worry too much about running the iAmp 800 to the Wizzy so long has you keep an eye on the gain/level.

This is all relative to UB. I don't play slab.

The iAmp 800 is (IMO, of course) a wonderful DB amp. While it doesn't actually have a HP filter, you can use the lower "semi parametric" band to do sort of the same basic thing. FDeck's preamp would be another easy and very effective alternative. I only sold my iAmp because I needed something smaller, and because I wanted to mix a mic and a pickup. On it's own merits, I like the sound of the iAmp800 slightly better than the sound of the Focus (likely because the EQ is so much more versatile) for amplifying the pickup signal alone, especially on loud gigs. But given the dual HP filters and the signal mixing/routing configuration of the Focus 2 series III units, it's a hands down winner overall. If you're planning on using just a pickup and don't mind the schlep, then just keep what you've got.

The schlep may just be the deciding factor. I've posted the iAmp800 in the classifieds just to get a feel if there is any interest. I like the amp, and there is still the chance of keeping it. But if I do, I may just order an iAmp 800 bag from Bob Gollihur. I think that would really help cut down on the bulk of the skb case that its in right now. I really have no use for a hardshell case for the amp since it doesn't get toured with and doesn't get tossed around. If anything, having it in that bag might be better since it would give a little *cushion* compared to the skb case.

As Phil said, going from 800 watts to 400 watts on a clarus probably wouldn't make much of a difference into a 200 watt cab.

Oh the GAS pains are killing me! :D

thanks for the link Bolo. I've read some older threads comparing the two, and decided to start a new one to focus (no pun intended) on those to brand heads specifically with the wizzy 12 or wizzy m-line cabinet. It seems that you can't really go wrong with either, just comes down to personal preference.
