Double Bass Wizzy on a Stand

I remember my GK days when I used the optional bracket that mounted the combo on a mic stand. It seemed very effective, I heard myself clearly and others I played with commented favourably.

I am now working on an adaptor that will put a 10" Wizzy on a PA stand, about 3'6" off the ground with a Clarus on top. Someone has suggested that I will lose 'floor coupling' and it won't work. The only way will be to suck it and see but in the meantime has anybody got any comments/opinions that would guide me?

I used to fly my 2x10 cabinet behind me at ear level. Carvin had cabinets that could be used as monitor wedges, PA cabinets, or bass speakers. The cabinets had the "adapters" on them so you could simply place them on the stand pole and raise it up. Wasn't the most stable rig, but it worked well, and I could hear myself. Of course, I had a 350w amp that I ran through it.

Tried it, didn't like it. I was trying to get as much low end out of the little trooper as it was and noticed a bit more of it with floor coupling. That little prop-up handle was enough to get the sound to my ears and carrying an amp stand just added to the schlep.

however, the venerable Chris Fitzgerald removed one of the handles on his VL208 cabinet and installed a cup mount for a PA type speaker stand. He seemed to enjoy that . . . .

until he got a pair of wizzys!

I put my Wizzy M-line on a tall amp stand all the time for the reasons you stated. Closer to ear level. I can hear it better. Not as boomy. Projects up and over drum kits.

Yes IME the floor coupling will make a difference. But whether that is good or bad is up to you. I like the cab on a stand for upright, but on the floor for slab. Here's a pic with my Wizzy combo, on its side for better stability.

I find that the floor coupling is nice for BG, but can be problematic for DB in some rooms. When I have mine on the floor for DB gigs (most of what I do), I usually have to cut some low frequencies. Up on a stand or a chair, I can cut less and still get the same basic sound, only closer to my head. If I could get it up over my shoulder and out of the direct path of the bass body, that would be cool. I just haven't figured out how to do it yet...

I'll take that as a yes. The general consensus seems to be that 10" Wizzy needs floor coupling for a BG but not a DB. My system for sticking the wizz on top of a PA stand would get it up to shoulder level. I would not be happy to go any higher with a Clarus perched on top because stability would become an issue. In practice, I'll probably go for 3'6" just to get the line of sound above the general crud on the floor.

Thanks to all for v helpful opinions. Talkbass never disappoints.
