Why aren't there that many females that play instruments in music today or even in the past, there really haven't been a great number of them. The only women that I can name off the top of my head are all singers, why aren't there more women playing instruments?

Just some random thoughts. You find plenty of female musicians in orchestras; jazz I'm not so sure, but most of your famous jazz greats seem to be men. Rock music has always been a "boy's club", so to speak. All-girl groups playing their own instruments have often been treated as novelty acts, or at least less seriously than male groups (perfect example, The Bangles had some great songs and a lot of good musicianship, but what did you ever hear about them, other than how "hot" Susanna Hoffs was). I occasionally see a woman playing guitar or bass in a band, almost never the drums (don't know why that is). Times are changing though, and it's not so much that way these days, but it still seems like female musicians have to work much harder to get respect from their peers or fans than males do, and that might be a deterrent. Who knows, I could be completely wrong.
yep, your right about female muso's have to work harder to get respect than males, like in one of my maths classes the other week, this guy asked me if i was in a band, i said nah, and he goes what do you play? and i go bass. and he and his mates starting laughing and stuff, but when one of my guy friends who plays drums got asked about what he plays, they were all cool about it! and yeah i also think that could be a deterrent.....

Exactly - and I think you have got to be very naive or some sort of hermit not to realise this and that there are people who go along to internet chat rooms/bulletin boards to make contact for their own purposes - there have been several high profile cases in the UK where girls have been targeted on chat rooms and raped/murdered - it's a serious problem and one that shouldn't be trivialised.
Recently I've been seeing a lot of female musicians on the scene. From what I've seen, females tend to play in orchestras, like Dan said. My wife plays the flute (please no American Pie jokes
, she never went to band camp). There are some very talented female guitarists, India Arie (sp?) comes to mind. I'm not a fan of her music, but she has recognizable talent. Tori Amos is another very talented musician. But in metal, rock, etc. females are few and far between.
I think I read in a Bass Player article that Tina Weymouth started on a Fender Mustang Bass specifically because the 32" scale was easier on her smaller hands. It's not any kind of sexism to notice that women have smaller hands than men and may prefer a 32" bass for that reason. However, most woman (including Tina W) players do just fine with a standard 34" bass.

Melissa Auf der Mer (or something like that) played for SP and Hole, and i believe i read something about her being in a Black Sabbath cover band now.

But anyway, I'm a female bassist, and I have to say that it's not as easy due to the "asthetic" thing. You know...you show up for a jam and the guys look at your legs first and that sort of thing, but I don't let it bother me. First of all, I'm a fat cow
, so guys don't notice the asthetics first! Joy of joys! I let my hands do the talking.And there are two women, one of them the bassist, in F-Minus, one of my fave bands. And then there's the Distillers, too. The lead singer also plays bass, and is ALSO female! Hurrah for Hellcat Records!
