Woman Bassists?

a perfect circle's former bass/violin player was a female as well, her name is Paz i believe, i dont remember her last name. but she left them and is now playing with billy corgans new band.

HI, I'm a female bassist. I also play guitar in a prog band and drums in a punk/pop band.

I don't approach music or playing any differently than guys do, that I know of. I'm just as much a gear head as most of my guy musician associates, perhaps even more so than some.

The only difference I can think of between guys and girls (speaking only for myself, of course) is that when I first started playing and wanted to be in a band, it was not because I wanted to get laid. It was because I wanted to make music. I never had trouble with being taken seriously, perhaps because my playing speaks for itself. I sometimes trip over it when I get a compliment on my playing....I can't help but wonder if they would have noticed my skills if I were a guy, and it makes me second guess myself. But being a girl, people do watch more closely it seems, men AND women, just because there aren't that many around. But I have seen a lot more in the past few years, they are out there, and they are talented. Let's keep encouraging women to play, if you know any young girls who are interested, be a good role model.

Someday I hope that things will just be equal, and it will be weird to see bands where everybody is all the same gender, or where you go to a club for "all chick-band night".

Female here, playing guitar and bass.
No gothic (even though someone mentioned that most girls down here play that... ).

I have played in a metal band, just to fill in for someone during recordings and gigs.
I play in a progrock band and a more mainstream grungy whatever band.

I play mainly my 6 string bass or my 4 string Ibanez...mainly 6 though.
Played as a sologuitarist for years, now trying to do both bass and guitar.

To the post starter:
You might be nice and stuff and you might have good intentions etc. but I would never ever want to play with someone who wants to play with a bassplayer because it is a female.

IMO there are only two conditions to be a bassist: first - you should have a bass, and second: you should play it. No matter about sex or age. But my girlfriend has a lot of problems - you know - first it looks so - "man, we will have a female bass player, and she looks nice - wow!". But after two or three months of playing the problem appears. You know - she looks really nice, and plays very nice, so everyone from the band want to take her to a dinner or sth like that - they just enjoy her as a girl, no as a musician... it's the biggest problem.

i find it curious enough that there aren't any female bassists that are as technically proficient as the male bassists we all know and love. i believe that it's possible for a female to play bass as good as geddy lee, stuart hamm, victor wooten, michael manring, jeff berlin, jaco, james jamerson, etc. but i don't believe it's happened yet. it seems like all the female bassists that we know of are only famous 'cause they're female. like it's a novelty or something.
if they weren't female they would be in the same category as like, the bassist of smashmouth or 3rd eye blind. sure they're adequate but they're not on any of our top 10 lists. honestly i've never heard a female bassist play anything even remotely challenging. i'm still waiting. the one that comes closest is Meshell Ndegeocello. but she's as close to a dude as you can get. her shaved head, wife beaters, muscles and mannerisms all seem to me like she could kick just about every guy's ass on this board!
anyway, those are my thoughts...

Dude, check out Rhonda Smith(from Prince's band) and Carol Kaye.(session great) Either of those two can hang with anybody.

i saw that donnas friday and i couldnt belive there guitar player, well any ways the reson u never hear about great female bass players is because no most poepl dont take them for real,because there femal's. when i had the jazz channle(bet is it the jazz) well i rember seeing this female playing a conklin 7 string,she was this wicked tall thin black lady with dreads or braids.(wats a better way of saying it).her bass had alomost a pink color wood for a top. i have never seen any one play so cleanly, i still cant belive wat she was playing.

Hey "Da-witch" That bass you are playing in that picture, is the action set-up so high on purpose, or are you just bad at setting up stuff like I am. My basses all had about inch high action about month after I bought them, but now I got them normal.

hi wendy!
i was actually thinking of paz when i wrote my post. perfect example of what i was talking about. while she may be "interesting" she's certainly not "challenging". i think it's safe to say she'll never approximate the ability of a geddy lee or victor wooten. i could play anything paz can play within the 1st few weeks of my learning bass. hell, even steve harris of iron maiden has WAY more ability then she does. he was my 1st bass hero when i was like 17. paz is only recognized because she's a female i think. no more talented a bassist then the guy in smashmouth and no one knows HIS name. i bet if he were a she then we would.
as for kim clarke, never heard of her and can't find any mp3s to listen to. i seriously doubt she can play like jaco though or else we'd already be hailing her as the queen of all bassists.
do get back to me when you post your mp3s, i'm always "interested" in finding bassists who "challenge" me as a player...

Excuse me sir, but having high action on a bass has nothing to do with being bad at doing adjustments, but with personal preference. As a bassplayer you should know that. Learn how to adjust your bass my friend.

Second of all: this bass isn't mine, it is a custom bass from someone else.

Third of all: All my adjustments (trussrod adjustments, saddles etc etc) are done by myself and all my basses have a low action.
My 6 string bass has too, and this one has 2 trussrods to adjusts.
Low action is required if you do a lot of tapping on a bass.
