Ah, I see. I guess people will want the same wiring as the Wal, anyway.

Do you have one installed in a bass already - or soundclips? I know that is a boring question...:)

Hi,
wired as Wal yes. The problem is they are wired in two ways.
Here's a sound clip of five-string version of this pickup with SVF filter pre.

Please download the clip, if you play it from the server there's some strange buzzing sound on.

Hmmm, it sounds good.

So if I was to order this from you and I wanted it sound to like my Mk1 Wal, what would I ask for in terms of the two wiring options? This is where my confusion is.

Thanks.
I'd wire it each string's pair of coils in series, and then all the string's pairs in parallel. A little less lows, lower output and resistance but a bit clearer sound. Not very much difference in anything else than output.

It's suprising that while there are a lot of people whining about the time it has taken to make these pickups only very, very few seems really interested in having these pickups. I suppose David and I have very similar way of making these pickups.
I disagree. This thread is filled with posters interested in purchasing, and for every poster there's a few who've read the thread, want the finished product, and simply haven't posted in the thread (like myself, until now).

There is a demand. Otherwise a four year old thread wouldn't get bumped constantly seeking updates and asking for waiting list positions.

That's how I see it too. I've followed this thread from day one (well, since I joined anyway), and will continue to do so. Most likely I will buy a pup/pre combo when it's ready for market. In the meantime, I won't be whining about how long it takes, because I understand that this is a complex product that is being developed by individuals in their spare time rather than by a large, well funded R&D lab.

Regarding the posts above.
If I had sold a pre-amp to everyone that talked about wanting filter pre-amps I would have sold 100's. Showing interest does not indicate a willingness to actually part with cash. Talking about pre-amps or these pickups costs nothing actually buying them is a different matter. This has been the case with the filter pre-amps since day one they don't sell very well in relation to the interest expressed on the forums. Had I not wanted to develop a pre-amp for my own basses I would not have done so at all because the sales don't make it worth doing on it's own.

Tire kickers will always outnumber cash in hand buyers, especially at premium prices for boutique goods. I intend to purchase a filter based preamp for my next bass, and clearly you're on the short list of suppliers I am looking at, especially since you're updating your product to be more versatile. I would love to hear reviews between your product and SDG's finished one so I can make a decision that best suits my playing needs. I probably fall under the category of people who likely could purchase your product but want to find out where the market stands in the short term.

I'd say a pickup from either of us and ACG preamp or even Bartolini EZQ will give you a very Walish sound. Of course it's not the real thing but anyway. I have made an Alembic style state variable filter from musikding forum and it also gives more than enough tone shaping.
As for five string pickup the string spacing can be anything from 17mm forward, at least on my pickups.
Marko

Thanx for the comeback MPU on the 5 string spacings

Hello Skelf , do your available preamps fit in regular bass depths or they need 1 3/4 inch depths to them as some preamps , thanx & have a good one .

That is fair enough however I have had a filter preamp avaiable for longer than five years and the sales are not great. I have no idea when there will be alternatives to my preamp so how long you will have to wait for the review your guess is as good as mine.

So i guess the best way would be to buy one ourselves & try it , nothing better than that I guess

Can you please clarify a few things Skelf?

I've read on a few forums that your EQ01 preamps are only available on bass guitars that you build and can not be purchased by themselfs. Is this still true?

There are no longer any distributers in the US states for your products? (I'm in the US)

On your web site it shows both EQ01 preamps out of stock, will they be available again any time soon?

It was mentioned in a previous post that you're updating your preamps, can you elaberate a little on that please?

I've heard alot of good things about your preamps on this forum as well as others I lurk. As many others on here, I've been waiting for SGD to complete the Wal clone pickup and preamp, but depending on timeframe getting MPU's pickups with a ACG preamp is very tempting!

Thanks in advance for any response your willing to give!

Hi
The EQ01 was previously only available in my own basses. This changed with the introduction of the new flag ship EQ03 pre-amp. The 03 replaces the 01 in my own basses.
I have stopped using dealers for various reasons and moved to direct sales only. I have a web shop on my site and am very happy to ship all round the world.
I have sold the few units I had in stock, new stock is on order and should be available in around two weeks.

The update refers to the 03 pre-amp which has several features that the 01 does not have. More details can be found in the news section of my site and a few pages back in this thread.

Cheers
Alan

Good to know. I had been looking on best bass parts for your current retail preamp and hadn't seen it.

Btw. Your instruments look beautiful. I am keeping an eye on the fanned fret work you're doing for Jared with much envy on my part.

A question for Alan/Skelf: what are the options for putting the EQ01 in a Fender Jazz Bass?

I understand that the output jack would need to be on the edge of the instrument, but besides that, would an EQ01 fit in the cavity of a Jazz Bass?

Thank-you.
