Correct me if I'm wrong...

I don't think anyone else makes anything close to a Wal pickup as far as construction goes? And the only preamp remotely close to a Wal is the ACG filter preamp, but even that doesn't have the "pick attack"?

The ACG pre, goes one better in my opinion, rather than having a pick attack, it has a treble filter which allows you to dial in pick attack or cut/boost a chosen frequency from roughly from hi-mids to crazy high end sizzle.

That pickup is looking lovely by the way, I'm sure it'll be more than worth the wait :)

I'm not that well educated on the ACG preamps, so thank you for responding Eude! Do all the ACG preamps offer the same filtering? Since you have the experiance, which one would you recommend for a 2 pickup bass to get the closest Wal like tone and pick attack type response?

As it's been said many times only David and I seem to be making these pickups. It's suprising that while there are a lot of people whining about the time it has taken to make these pickups only very, very few seems really interested in having these pickups. I suppose David and I have very similar way of making these pickups.
I'd say a pickup from either of us and ACG preamp or even Bartolini EZQ will give you a very Walish sound. Of course it's not the real thing but anyway. I have made an Alembic style state variable filter from musikding forum and it also gives more than enough tone shaping.
As for five string pickup the string spacing can be anything from 17mm forward, at least on my pickups.

Can anyone recommend a Wal pickup clone?

There's nothing close available just now, from what I've heard, but these ones from SGD Lutherie and MPU should be pretty authentic :)

Hey Mike,
The ACG EQ01 gives you a low filter stack per pickup, and one treble filter stack, so that's definitely the best option for a two pickup bass.
If you've got one pickup, the EQ02 will be just fine, one low filter stack and one treble filter stack. It can also be wired up for two pickups, but you only have one low filter stack for both pickups, so you miss out on the ability to blend filtered tones from each pickup, ala Wal...

Happy to answer any other questions mate :)

Here's two pics of the first MM cover 8-coil pickup. It can be wired either older or newer Wal way. It's about 5mm taller than MM cover (24mm total height).

Do you sell a version where all the wires are gathered into two? Soldering 16 different wires - you'd definately have to know what you're doing and have a knowledge of electronics, I would have thought.

Of course. I just mentioned the wiring possibilities. This one is still unsoldered because I don't know what way the buyer wants it to be soldered.

Hmmm, with a layout like that, it'd be fun to rig it up so each string goes to a seperate output.

Imagine the fun that could be had sending the D and G to guitar amps, or setup with a lush chorus, while sending the bass strings to something else, like a fat sounding amp, or an envelope filter.
