OT a little, I keep hearing people praise the Squire series (Bass and Guitar), I'm curious, as I always considered them the poor cousin of the equivalent Fender offering. What makes them so much cheaper? Are they really as good as their counterparts? (yeah, I know, subjective). Are the electronics any different? (maybe this should be a new thread)

I've been avoiding these basses for a few years because of the hype. I touched one a while ago and thought it was "meh". But I found one at GC the other day, and it was quite an instrument! 5 string though, and that low B gives me agita, but I liked it so much I bought this one from Sweetwater and a fretless off Reverb.


Here's what I'll say about the bass and the switches/knobs.

- First, the neck on this thing is superb. It was $860, but it has the neck of a $2000 guitar. The edges are perfectly rolled, and the frets all contoured. That was a big selling point for me; it's so comfy.

- The finish is among the best I've seen on any guitar, ever. No weirdness that I see anywhere on it.

- Knobs, switches, dongles... these turned me off at first too. But... the preamp in this instrument is top-of-the-line as far as tone. It's extremely flexible and very manageable. I normally play a EBMM Stingray Special (see avatar) and I feel like this preamp is superior to it. I feel like it also sounds WAY better than my Fender Ultra P. The knobs are volume, overall tone (stacked), pickup blend, then active high, mid, mid freq sweep (stacked) and bass.

The switch goes from active to passive, and passive sounds GREAT! When the EQ is flat, there's almost no volume difference. And the overall tone knob applies to the bass whether it's in active or passive mode. Very cool.

- I've heard of weight issues with these. The 5-string from GC was a beast, but this is not particularly heavy. Heavier than my 'Ray, but not obnoxiously so. In the same ballpark as my Fender.

- Same with neck dive... The 5-string had a light to moderate neck dive. This one has none that I can tell so far.

- I was able to get the action nice and low, with no fret buzz.

Because of most of these things, this is a VERY comfortable instrument to play, and it's musical as hell!

Here's the fretless, I just got notification that it shipped as I was writing this up.

I've avoided the Sire hype for a few years now, but I picked one up to try out at Guitar Center and was blown away. It was a 5-string though, and they don't like me, so I ordered this one from Sweetwater. Fit-n-finish is fantastic, sound is KILLER, neck is amazing, and price is under 1K. What the heck is not to like!

This one has no discernable neck dive and isn't very heavy.

As an avid NON-Fender guy because they are SO over hyped, etc, has made me stay a Peavey guy, BUT I own TWO Sires.

Like you, I was BLOWN AWAY by the quality. They really do play and feel like a bass that would be in the boutique category.

Congrats !!!!!!!!!!! SIRE RULES the classic bass genre, in MY opinion.
