Anybody happen to know what wood was used in the old Gibson eb-3. Also any info on recreation of pickups would be much appreciated

You think any mahogany would do a good job of gettin the same tone? does the south America part make that big a difference?

Mahogany. That was the wood.
I believe Allparts has repro pickups. If you're patient, real ones show up from time to time on ebay. Every so often somebody guts one, so they're not that rare. The knock offs come around on ebay as well.
The "South America" part makes no difference at all.
(why you would want the tone that an old EB-3 has is beyond me)
Those old Gibby's sounded the way they did (muddy) for several reasons: Pickups, wood, short scale...
Getting the "Tone" of an EB0 or EB3 isn't hard, if that's what you're looking or: EQ your bass with the highs down low.
The DiMarzio model one pickup replaces the big humbucker (often referred to as "mudbucket" because it tend to sound nondistinct). The DM sounds much better than the original but not as good as a Dark Star, which is a drop-in replacement (if you can find a Dark Star).
And you forgot the "felt" retractable damper on the bridge/tail-piece of the EB0
I had an EB0 (bot for $50 - with cracked - epoxy repaired head-stock) and it was muddy for lots of reasons.
I think it also had a polarity switch - I don't recall anything good about it other than it was my first Gibson.
I think I gave it to someone in exchange for a pizza and a six pack.
The Dimarzio model one is not an accurate replacement for the Gibson neck humbucker - they are made to be a lot less bassy. Artec do a replacement and that is MUCH more authentic (whether than is what you want is down to you)
The model 1 is still a good pickup, just not the same. And it has various switches that are a nuisance if you don't want to mod your bass.
BUT, if you are after the Jack Bruce / Andy Fraser tone, the bridge pickup is probably more relevant anyway. As far as I know they used the bridge or bridge and neck a lot more than just the neck.
