So... I swapped the Dolf's for the RJ Neo's in the Chronos, which currently has the Alien preamp. Immediately I noticed that the RJ's sound flatter in the mids, crisper up top and less blurry in the upper bass. "Flatter" is the best way to say it, vague as that is. The dolfs by comparison sound creamier, and have a little "slower" attack for lack of a better term. The bass now has a very viable slap tone, which it never really had (due to the specs I chose), and the low end is more controllable, but still massive. Ultimately, its a little too flat in the mids for my needs as it is, I miss a little of the creaminess in the midrange, that "horn-like quality" that i dig. I think that may be due to the combination of super clean pups + super clean pre. this is a concept that people talk alot about with amps, "too much of a good thing"; a wooly sounding head with a wooly sounding cabinet, or an inherently crispy and bright head with an unforgivingly sharp sounding cab can sound out of balance as they have similar peaks and valleys, frequency wise. Often the best amp/cab combinations are of two pieces of gear with different design goals, which come together to strike a nice tonal balance. Seems like that may be whats up here.
The Alien preamp is very transparent, and has very little distortion (the pleasing variety) in the midrange and lower treble region. I believe that the eq points on the preamp are set for a more traditional configuration, when I heard it in a bass with Nord P/big split, it absolutely smoked in that setup. i was VERY impressed. With my bass, and these pups, its just not quite the right recipe.
Just for my own reference point, I'm putting the East SP2 back into the bass to see how it fares with the RJ's. I really like the responsiveness and evenness of the RJ's, and i'm hoping the East will add back a little creaminess in the upper midrange that the alien doesnt quite offer, or at the very least allow me to tone shape onboard the way I like, being able to adjust the center point of each of the 3 bands, and use the onboard mid stack to bump the midrange in a pleasing "split the diffence" kind of way. At least thats what I'm hoping/assuming.
Mind you this is all IMO, YMMV. The testing i did was over 2-3 gigs with the RJ's and the dolfs. Testing so far done on small and medium stages with my puma 900, PJB briefcase, EA VL110s, big E 8x5 and Tecamp M212.I'll be happy to report back when I get East pre back in, and see where things are at. So don't get me wrong, both fantastic pieces of gear, but for my desires, not quite the magic combo.
