Work stress

i here ya FL',...

i went nuts from stress working on a government contract job at Bell Aerospace. i was a crack bench tech and almost every repair stamped EXPEDITE came to my bench. on my final day i kicked a $20k portion of an F-118 Early Warning System across the floor straight at my boss and his supervisor! (i couldn't believe i did that)

my Supe' looked at me,.. i looked at him and demanded he waive the 2week notice and sign me out immediately. he fully understood and offered me, his best Tech, a 3month leave. i said no!!!

as months went by, my health improved as did my attitude about life. i started a small business and joined a band. :)

My job was polluted with "power hungry personalities". The boss was ineffective - and placed there only because there was a member on the board that put him there. Nobody respected him. He would write you up because he did not like the manner in which you took notes at a meeting.

A coworker of mine (who was also under this boss) was a megalomaniac - a guy whose wife was at a higher position in life - and whipped - so he brought his anger to work. He had a lot of time in the company, so nobody dared question him. He could sit in meetings and constantly throw you under the bus, fling papers across the room; the boss would just sit there. Of course, nobody else could get away with that behavior.

HR was BS, one "lady" whose job was to smile, then stab you in the back as you walked away. She was poltically tied to the "gang in control", so if she decided you did not meet up to her "high standards", you were sunk.

And then, the head of engineering - a guy who was completely out of his element. I knew more about what his people were doing than he did. He was another one that could send cutting, bastardizing emails, and nobody cared.

All in all, a wise decision. It would not surprise me that this place goes under, and with the way it's run, there's a good chance it will.

I work from home, so my work always comes home with me. But I don't lay awake at night wondering about the next day or what I did that day. I get busy moments that stress me out trying to juggle three of four issues at once, but that's the extent of it.

When I get stressed out, I come hang out in OT for a little bit, hit up my sports websites, then bear down and clear all the issues of my plate.

It's good to rid oneself of stress. My boss, after I quit, kept calling me to spend a few weeks training someone. I told them I would come back and do it, 40 hours per week, $300 per day which is much less than what a rep from the machine company would charge. In this business $300/day is very reasonable. They turned me down saying it was way too much :rollno: After several months, they ended up paying a rep from the machine company about $1000/day :) Screw em!!!!!

Great suggestion. Sometimes, when all the above mentioned just is not doing it for you, hitting something can really be a stress relief. I personally like, although I have not had a chance to get enrolled, is a martial arts class. It teaches you about mind and body, and self defense. It makes for power chi, and the utmost power in relaxation, and meditation.

True, as daft as it sounds, I find weightlifting to be a great for the mind, you become so focused on something, that everything outside, all the mental stressors, just disappear while you're in the gym.

I just started trying to get into weight lifting more. I went from two simple weights, to a gym where I used the machines. My bro, who majored in health and fitness, instructed me on good workout practices. The best feeling I got was working out my back and experiencing the soreness of muscles I never really get to use daily.

I highly recommend it to anyone, give it just a few time of going, and once you know the right way to work out, then its golden. The feeling of stiff tightness as you walk is quite the esteem booster.

Nice one :)

We have quite a lot of avid gym goers here, feel free to fire into the gym and weightlifting thread!

PS - Sorted a typo in the original post!

...I had a few orders for knives but wasn't sure if I could make a living at it, at that time. As it turned out, everything fell together perfectly...

While I came to self employment by a different route, it worked out well for me also. Produce a good quality product in a reasonable time frame, and respect your customers, the rest takes care of itself.
